Is it the 966's that were specifically designed for this application? I cant remember. Any other brands or types suggested would be appreciated.

Mark - you'll get a lot of varied opinions on that subject. I've had a hard time trying to categorize the different uses for each belt type (ie. I've made spreadsheets....tables....lists....etc.) Since most of the info I was collecting was hearsay...couldn't come to a general concensus on anything.

That is, until I saw this little write up by TruGrit:

Kinda lays it out - had to read it a few times to get everything....and I've highlighted the ones that work best for my applications.

Hope that helps.

IIRC, the 900 series was designed for hi speed, hi pressure. If it felt dull, just push real hard and it would expose fresh cutting surfaces. At least that's the idea.
I use 977 3M belts, in 40 grit. They leave a scratch pattern like an 80 grit belt that is easily removed by the following finer grits.

I've found that I get equally good, and quick results, and as good a belt life, by grinding slow, and using lighter pressure on the belt, just letting the abrasive do the work.
Easier on the hands too! ;)

Thanks a bunch Guys. Every time I order belts I have a hard time deciding what to get. We need to get somebody to make some belts with unobtainium crabide.

Mark, I talked to a 3M abrasives salesman some years ago, and at that time, he recommended the 963G for hi carbon steel, and the 977 for stainless.

They have added a few belt's since, but those two are still listed.
