What I would like to know is if the High Standard 1911 is of acceptable quality.

I understand that it is made in the same plant as the Rock Island Armory.

And the follow up question is this, If the High Standard is not acceptable, what entry level 1911s are. Is there something that can be bought off the shelf and work, not expecting the accuracy or smoothness of a higher priced gun, but it has to go bang each time the trigger is pulled.

Thanks

second m1marty on the SA Milspec. Also vote for the SA GI model, if you're after a simple, no-BS combat handgun.

Ditto. The flavor of the SA Mil-Spec or GI (note that they are not the same) pairs nicely with Mac's Torch and FM Turbo head.

I noticed that STI has a model called the Spartan -- about 600.00.
Anyone have any experience with it?

If you have large hands take a look at the CZ97B... its not a 1911 but just as good imho.

I really like the looks of the Kimber Milspec.

springfield makes the milspec. kimber's basic model is the custom II.

the entry level springfields are good guns at a good price. however i suspect you will end up customizing it with a beavertail, grips, sights, ambi safety, etc. the end cost is a couple hundred dollars higher.

from springfield, the loaded is a very nice pistol at a reasonable price, with some of the extras i mentioned.

from kimber, the comparable model is the custom II.

What do you consider "basic?"

While a mil-spec will function, it's not the easiet to shoot well and fast as set up. This means that more money will be spent to bring it up to snuff. In that case, a better value would be the gun that has the bare minimum of upgrades already onboard.

How much money did you have or want to spend ?

between the high standard and the rock island i'd definitely go with rock island, from what i've read on other forums rock islands customer support is outstanding. I agree with an above post that the springfield armory mil spec is a definite step up however it is quite a bit more expensive. As far as colts unless you're concerned primarily with prestige or resale i wouldn't mess with them. over the years i've had several colt .45's in both series 70 and series 80 models and have been unimpressed. Kimber seems to be a quality product but once again the price reflects that. You might want to look at the taurus version of the 1911 as it seems to be a good working pistol. finally you might want to look on some of the 1911 forums and you will get a better feel for what will suit your needs. If i happened on a RI .45 for under $400 i'd buy it in a minute.

Oops, my bad. I should have remembered given that they're right next to the XDs at my local store.:foot:

Thanks to everyone for the feedback. I appreciate all of the answers.

The question of how much, is tough. Although it would be nice to be able to get a sub $500 gun that works well, I get the impression that it will cost a little more. So I guess the answer is, " as little as I can afford to spend".

What constitutes a bare minimum of upgrades?

I've read a little bit about the Sig, and it looks out of my price range, and I may look into the Tuarus, to see how the prices compare when I figure out what my "needs" are.

Thanks

IMO good sights are the only upgrade everyone will agree on. All the other stuff depends on your needs/personal preference.

Don't worry about not being able to afford the SIG. Despite the price their 1911 has a pretty bad reputation. With many reports of trips back to the factory to fix problems.

My Springer GI shoots just fine- better than I do in fact. I don't shoot enough to justify (on my bugdet anyway) all of the bells & whistles. I did spring for a pair of Gunner Grips & now it locks into my hand nice & solid.
