Higher quality Griptilian?

I have the Ritter griptillians mini and standard - very nice - especially the mini

I like the quality, axis lock, the blade shape (modified drop point), and also the washed (but not black look)

The mini seems close to pefect for the size blade it is - full liners, not to thick for a front pocket, and so sharp I start to bleed anytime I go near the blade

However the full size is great, but does not do it for me as fully
- Too thick in the scales for comfortable carry
- Lack of full liners - and light feel ing handles
- Part of the grip moulding sticks into my hand - on all the full grips one of the horizontal lines on the heel seems to extend a millimetre too far - I'll trim it soemtime soon. Not a big issue but irritates

Ideally I'd like the full grip - simply with full liners and flatter scales - like my old beloved gerber bolt knives

So a general purpose camping/country knife - no false edges or tacticool features

i'd appreciate reccomendations on what I should be lusting after?

Thanks ortogonal1

I have waded through the benchmade site but find it hard to do it in a structured way despite the product finder search- and followed up names mentioned in the forums but have not seen what fits yet. Also I suspect I am not the first on blade forums who have had this wish and are possibly closer to the action than I am.

The 720 is looking pretty close - too bad it is discontinued. I assume the scales were fairly flat givinging it a modest profile. Not qute the blade shape hoped but not far off. Gives hope that there is one out there. Thanks

There is a dude that does handle mods for the Griptilian. Not sure if it would help you though since it does not resolve the 3/4 liner situation. He posts a lot in the "Pimp My Knife" section over at the Ususal Suspects. Might want to check it out since a slimmer G10 would weigh more than the Noryl GTX and feel better for ya.

benchmade has released a limited edition of the 720 series.
I believe the model number is 723.They are still available thru many on-line stores. The 720 series is a great knife, much better than a
grip.Love the "bowie" style blade.

I completely agree with your comments. Flatten it our Benchmade!

Also, the Mini's grip is too short for me.

They're good knives that are ALMOST there for me. YMMV

If you like the Mini---the BM 525 is the Mini on steriods---a touch bigger than a mini but not as big as a full sized Grip---the 520(525's big brother) is a very big stout knife.

Another that comes to mind and is about the same blade size as the full sized Grip is the H&K 14205. It does have full SS liners and flat G10 scales. The blade shape is a little different, but there's no recurve like there is on the 14210.

One nice thing about the 720 is that it is under-appreciated, i.e. LNIB examples regularly sell for $50-65 dollars. Shame, really.

If money is not an issue, you might look to the (dare I say) Sebenza. The blades are similar in shape to the Ritter's.

Check out the HK 14210 and 14205. Pretty much upgrade versions of the Mini Grip and Grip, respectively. They look a little funny closed with the gap, but the handle length while open is an improvement.

I use a Mini-Griptilian every day and with only a small change to the handle I am very happy with it. The handle didn't feel quite right. It felt short with the fingers too far from the blade. I moved the bottom front edge of the handle forward to make the knife more slim and allow the fingers to move forward on the handle toward the blade. It gives the knife a much better feel IMHO. The blade was modified a little too, to give it more point.

Nice work! That's how they should come from the factory IMO.
