Highly irresponsible me...

It is common truth, that responsible knife owners should not carry 3+inch black knives to the office. They do not open them in threatening one-handed manner. And do nothing what could remotely hint, that knives can be used as weapons.

Apparently, I am very irresponsible guy. I carry a 806D2 to the office. I open it one-handed. Yesterday, I broke the last rule.

Would not tell the whole story (too much to type), but in our room appeared a thick stack of paper to be disposed. Naturally, on Friday everyone has enough of stress to relive. It was to early to drink beer, and play Quake. So the logic chain was something like this "paper to be disposed-- something not needed -- something that can be damaged freely!!".
After warning colleagues that I'm going test a knife, I produced a 806, opened it and STAB!!!. And... STAB!!! With proper relief of energy (read -- "battlecry").

Stack was nicely pierced, handle of 806 appeared secure, stress was nearly gone.

So -- do not be like me, guys!!:)

"Battle cry" was unneccessary, as were multiple stabs, simply to transport a stack of papers to the wastebasket. Don't know if the "warning" was necessary either.

If you want to stab things with your knife, privacy would be advised.

Most employers would've fired you for such antics, as you seem to be somewhat unbalanced.

depends what sort of office you work in - everyone knew I carried a knife at my old job, and if one was needed, I was the first port of call. I even threw and caught it a few times (a hobby of mine) to admiring onlookers (yeah, we never got much work done).

But of course, you have to be sure that you're not going to be misunderstood. I've also worked at a charity HQ and a leading UK bank, where such antics would not have gone down well at all. It's all about judging the people you're with; if someone needs a knife and you have one, there's nothing wrong with pulling out your steel (though beware), but if you're among 'sheeple' you have to excercise some discretion.

I have many patients Here that were sent in because of similar displays in public areas :)

Of couse the difference between them and us is that they got caught :D

My take on this is that it is not wise to stab paper, however if you were to stab a dork you would be forgiven and no one would be offended.

I can’t help it but this story reminds of the one about the man who turned up at work one morning and announced to his colleagues:

“I must be getting old - this morning I found a grey pubic hair”.

He was met by generally uncomfortable silence from the mixed office crowd.

The he said:

“You know I was really cool about it – no hysterics, no carry on, no overreaction …………….. not like the other people in the elevator”

A lawyer was filling out a job application when he came to the question, "Have you ever been arrested?" He answered, "no." The next question, intended for people who had answered in the affirmative to the last one, was "Why?" The lawyer answered it anyway: "Never got caught."

Would you mind elaborating for those of us that have not been cultured? :D

This may be baiting, but I will bite anyway.

Yes. You are irresponsible. Irresponsible to do what you did and to post it here.

Knifeowners, like gunowners, must appear and be responsible in public. Period.

We can whine and mew and say that it is not fair, but if you want to keep the ability to possess these tools, you MUST act responsibly. In every government, there are those waiting to take your tools away. By acting irresponsibly, you endanger us all.

Now, come to my hunting camp in central Texas and we will talk knives, test knives, sharpen knives, throw axes, etc.

There is a right and wrong place to do such things. I killed a deer yesterday. I did not do it in the middle of downtown in front of 50 sheeple. They would never understand.

Machaira,

You have so eloquently stated your position I have not the heart to disagree since I know I would be wrong.

We can whine about the sheeple being oxygen pirates all day long, but it will do no good. There will always be a majority that honestly believes their food originates at the grocery store.

Unfortunately to be a true adult we must at least try and coexist with these people. We don't have to like it, we just have to do it.

Just be sure and get together at your Mishiefs, hunting camps, whatever, and blow off that steam that makes each of us reality driven tool owners.

Have a great week, and be careful out there. :D

I guess it depends on who was around at the time and their perception of you and your actions.

I might let some of my friends at church see me do such a thing because I know that they know me. And I have a couple at work who know me well enough that I might do something weird front of them. But I work in a cube farm and there are always lots of people around that don't know me well enough. So I could never do anything like this at work.

I'll assume that you have some good friends at work who know you well and took your actions the way you meant them.

Never thought it would be taken this seriously.

Maybe my mileage seriously varies - I have a reputation of somewhat eccentric (painting miniature soldiers, watching Japanese cartoons), yet nice guy. With more than a year of responsible knife use history.

And on more serious note -- maybe we all are doing something wrong with sheeple?

I do not mind "coexisting" with them. But, now it is somewhat one-sided process. We try to co-exist. We use undersized knives, open them under tables with both hands and pretend not having them at all:) . They -- just exist, without making any sort of compromises, causing as much trouble, as they wish.

Truth, that carrying a 4" pocket knife is 100% normal maybe self-evident to us. But if a hypothetic sheeple just never came around anyone with more than a keychain SAK as EDC? S/he sees something unknown, and gets worried (normal, natural reaction). If s\he never sees it again -- impression of "abnormality" would stay. Especially when reinforced with guilty expression of owner's face and nervous explanation that "This is legal... I plan to do no harm with it..."

Pehaps if few first sheeple faced "That's my knife. Rather good one. What is wrong about it?" -reaction -- would understand that there is both nothing to worry about, and no use protesting? :)

As a sidenote --I haven't thought of all this stuff while commiting the first mentioned crime -- so I'm not some kind of anti-sheeple therrorist.:)

i think you're over-thinking everything. it's pretty simple: if you behave in a way people might find threatening, expect them to respond. if you don't care how people react, then do what you want. if you do care, then behave accordingly. but i think making stabbing motions into a block of paper in front of people at work while yelling is pretty much always a bad call. that's kind of a no-brainer dude.

....you will certainly increase your chances of provoking a sheeple response if you "stab" with a "battlecry"...... there is a time and place for very thing. Just like playing a Yani recording to the troops before an engagement would be ill advised.:D
