Higonopinel - folding paring knife

I recently picked up a pair of the Carbon Opinel Paring knives. I love the blade profiles on these. I've been using one in the kitchen and the other one was sitting in reserve so I decided to have a bit of fun with it and make it into a friction folder. And I did most all of the work using just my opinel saw (to saw the blade well) and the awl on my SAK Pioneer (to drill the pivot pin and lanyard holes). I used a single piece of Blood Wood, which is reasonably hard stuff. In the end its sort of like a combination of a Higonokami and an Opinel. I'm very happy with how it turned out. Simple, elegant, and sturdy. I wouldn't use it for anything besides paring and light slicing duties, because of how thin the blade is, but it is very snug in the closed and opened positions, while still opening smoothly. Just thought I'd share. Comments welcome.

Love it!
Even their fixed blades are cheap & easy to mod.

hey thanks. yeah it was $15 for 2 paring knives. great steel, great blade shape and profile. And it was actually a godsend that they only used a half tang (much less grinding for me).

Love it, I really like playing with friction folder stuff. Could you give a side view please?

Hey Davek14 -

I like the slim opi in your video. Here are the side shots:

Its pretty slim. Dimensions are between 5/16" and 3/8" (11/32") wide x 5/8" tall x 5" long (6 3/4" with tang, same as Svord Peasant). So its a bit long for EDC but will make a good around the house utility knife or camp paring knife. If you notice on the back end the heel stuckout a tiny bit when closed because I made the handle a tiny bit too narrow. But i just filed it down without any adverse effect to the cutting edge.

Very nice.
I have a couple of the paring knives and know how well this blade will slice. That would make a fine portable food knife for camping.
