Sorry for a trival question, but what does this mean when people say they are hijacking a thread?
The definition as I know it i pertains to taking control of a vehicle. Does this mean that the moderators take control of the thread or somehow change it?

Thanks in advance.

Hijacking is to take someone else's thread and move it in a totally different direction than the OP intended. For instance if someone took this thread and began talking about the HEST or new firekit or some such.

I assume it's frowned upon. I don't get bent out of shape about it, but there are those who might. I will also admit to my share of hijackings.

I think the etiquette of hijacking depends on when it happens. If the OP has received some responses to the original topic and it has somewhat run its course to steer the thread to something else that has come up in the discussion isn't so bad. But if you do it before the original issue has even been addressed, then that is poor etiquette. A new thread is a better idea.

if you are polite about the hijack it usually is ok. I always apologize in advance when I ask a question in a thread I didn't start.

If someone mentioned the phrase "thread etiquette" to me 2 years ago, well, I don't know what I would've thought :D

Did you guys hear that Jeff said there's going to be clip point RC samples at Blade?

That's going to be great!

:D

For example. Start a thread in GD titled "Strider vs. Sebenza" I personally guarantee someone will hijack it and start ranting about Strider and you'll end up at Sparks massive thread on the subject.

That's hijacking.

This is also:

So, I like ice cream. What's your favorite flavor? :D

I'd also like to add that actually experiencing the thing is better then theory. Really, go ask for some honest opinions about those two. ;)

Hijacking a thread is ok if someone for instance starts a thread talking about heat treat on carbon steel and I for instance say that all I need to repopulate the world after armageddon is Catherine Zeta Jones.:) You can see how folks would then focus on many different images of Catherine Zeta Jones (she was great in the two Zorro movies) and forget about heat treating anything but some bed sheets.:) It would be ok since there are no bad images of her and the ensuing lines of thought would be accepted by 99.9% of the users of this forum. But since I do not have Michael Douglas' bank account it is unlikely I could get Catherine to consent to a trial run to see if my hypothesis might actually work. Mike

Don't worry Mike, as long as your aiming high that is a good thing. At least if you miss you will still probably hit relatively high up, where as if you set your goals too low and miss then you end up drifting down some creek with out a paddle.

Also I would probably have went with Angelina Jolie, but hey what do I know about heat treating :D.

Liv Tyler. This thread is now officially hijacked.

If I could have a second round draft then Jessica Simpson or that red head from Transporter 3 that I don't know her name.

Edited to add: This is also referred to as derailing, it is when someone unintentional knocks a thread off track and it keeps going for a while.

Hey didn't somebody say they are going to make clip point Rats????

:D From the discussion, not ALL hijacking is bad then. You just have to start talking about really hot supermodels or movie stars.:thumbup:

We like Hijackers. It makes for much more interesting conversation than same old boring knife talk about a RAT knife :D

Most peeps on here dont get bent outta shape over a thread hijack's unless it is to start trouble or being a trouble maker.... other than that is is fine...like yesterday Jeff anounced the RTAK and we all got off track on flip flops ? :D
