Today we were out for a 4.1 mile walk in Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, near Elwood Illinois. This is located on the old Joliet Arsenal property south of Joliet, and is an in process restoration of prairie habitat, with some interesting surprises along the way.

Here are the surprises, the old ammo storage bunkers scattered all over the place.

Cool photos. Is it possible to stay in the bunkers overnight? Not sure if it allowed or not or if they check. Would be a unique camping experience, something out of an apocalyptic movie.

I don`t think you can stay in them. The neat thing is that all of the hikes I`ve shown pictures of have been less than an hours drive from home. This one is about 30 minutes.

Definitely a plus to have something like this so close to your house.

Just read the sign with the parks hours. I guess when the SHTF, you have a good place to go lol.
