Hi there,

Thought I'd post some pics of today's hike in Whiteshell provincial park in Manitoba, Canada.

Early on in the trail we crossed a beaver dam at the end of a lake which was still frozen:

The scenery was wonderful; the first pic is looking back on tha beaver dam as we climbed the ridge. There was a boggy area that was still frozen; we were walking through patches of sphagnum moss and frozen pools.

I always punctuate the turn-around point by building a fire with surrounding tinder/fuel, and having a spruce and/or pine tea (today was a blend :) ) The first photo is the layout of the basic components... platform with birch bark tinder, then kindling and larger fuel (along with a Silky Pocketboy which I used to collect the wood). This was the first time I'd used my new Akubra Tablelands hat; I found it very comfortable:

Here's me lighting the fire and enjoying a brew:

Some of my gear. The knives I brought along are below, as well as my pack. The pack is Kifaru XRay, with a various pouches from Kifaru, Maxpedition, and Emdom. There's a Snowsled ventile Stormshirt tied to the top of the pack, which was a nice windbreaker early on in the hike when it was quite chilly.

The Maxpedition canteen pouch fits the NATO water bottle nicely. The red pouch is a light-weight water-proof pouch into which I place tinder as I hike, so that when I light the fire I have some on hand.

Of course, I brought a few knives along; there's my Woodlore, Busse BOSS Street, Busse BAD, and a J. Neilson small fixed blade, which I pocket-carry instead of a folder:

Thanks for the comments :)

Beautiful photos! Is that a beaver dam at that bog area?
The only beaver dam that we saw was at the end of the small frozen lake. In the bog area there was lots of deadfall... that might be what looks like a beaver dam

Thanks for the pics.
What hat is that?
Jason

It's an Akubra Tablelands

Nice pics!

What is your coat tied with?

I just used some paracord that I had in my pocket; happened to be blaze orange.

Can you fit the metal cup and the nato bottle in the canteen pouch? i recently got the set and need to find a something that can hold them both together, wasn't sure if the pouch would work or not.
thanks
nice pics

There is no snow there either, and the forest looks as dry as around here. This part of Canada is one big tinder box, lets hope for some timely rains.

Usually we have at least a two foot snow pack with good cross country skiing and snowmobiling. The lakes normally look like cities with all the ice fishing shacks. This is sure a different year.

I just checked... unfortunately the Maxpedition pouch won't fit the crusader cup and the bottle. If I really tried hard to force it in and bent the handles a bit then it might squeeze in, but if it did it would be very tight.

You're right... there was very little snow. I built the fire on a huge area of granite (which most of that area is), right beside a shaded area that still had about 6 inches of snow. I buried the ashes under quite a pile of snow and stirred them in to be certain that they were out. The vegetation is definitely more dry than usual for this time of year.
