Since I've gotten a pretty good grasp on the bow drill, and the Mullein I want to try for the hand drill isn't up yet...I've been thinking more about flint and steel, and flint cutting edges. I know there is a lot of chert in this area lots of points are still found in farmers fields here. I want to experiment some myself with what's available here locally. So yesterday I a went for a hike up a dry watercourse where I had found some good sized pieces of flint in a pool below a small falls a while back. It has been dry for two weeks so I wanted to see if I could find some larger pieces on up above. Also, in the event of an evac due to an incident at one of the local nuclear power plants...or some such similar event...and the roads are clogged my rout west could well be on foot, I thought I'd see how over grown an old trail and logging road up this way is now. I hadn't been up that way in nearly twenty years before today.

This is the bottom of the first fall.

There is some pretty rough terrain here, and the rain forest is coming back to life now.

The mosquitoes are already getting rough in the evenings. I lit a little fatwood to smoke out an are while I took a break. I'm really liking the ESEE fire starter.

Climbed up a couple of short, dry, water falls.

I threw my pack onto the top of this fall.

This is looking back down it, you can see where the flowing water has carved patterns in the stone.

The trail is completely reclaimed by nature and the shelf that was the logging road is all but unrecognizable and probably is to someone unaware of its existence...but I did find one thing I was looking for. There are several pieces of flint up there that are bigger than bread boxes and lots of it exposed in the water course....going back this evening with a hammer and an extra pack :)

Cool. Wish there was some chert around here. Looking forward to seeing your harvest. Post a pic or two if it isn't too much trouble.

Take some safety glasses with you this evening too ;).

Sounds like you have a good day ahead of you, yet. Make sure to get some pics ;)

Mistwalker that is perfect E&E country!

Looks like a great day. You are lucky to have good flint localy.

Awesome. I like that you threw your pack up top. Shows how you pack your stuff for use, not just ambling around. Also shows how tough Maxpedition stuff is!

Great Photos

Thanks for posting

Thanks bill, glad you liked them :)

I'll definitely be packing my safety glass, a bandanna and a long sleeved shirt!

I'll take some pics.

Yeah, I'm gonna try to get some big pieces, and then process more at home. Asking me to take pics is sort of like asking a cow to be beef...usually not necessary :)

Yeah...easy to disappear here. In my younger days nobody could keep up with me on this mountain side...it was my playground when I was little.

very nice pics!

Thanks man, glad you liked them!

That dry waterfall is very cool

Yeah, pretty cool...lots of dry waterfalls on the mountain side right now....no rain in weeks.

Yeah, lol, that's my usual method of climbing. I hate climbing vertical surfaces with a pack on my back. That was one of the main reasons I wanted that particular pack. The design is perfect for it, and the compartmentalization and organization keeps everything in place in the process.
