Hiking and fire-making in Quebec

Hi all,

I spent last Sunday hiking about Gatineau Park with my girlfriend. We're trying to get out fairly regularly, in order to prepare for a longer outing in Algonquin Park later this summer. Weekend wanderings up and down the hills in Gatineau makes for good preparation!

This hike ran the course of the entire day (with stops for food and coffee prep), and we enjoyed some warm weather and dramatic skies. The black flies - and cluster flies - were out in droves, but we were slathered in DEET, so it wasn't too bad. That being said, the flies were so thick in some low-lying areas that it was difficult to get a good view of the map!

A few gear and activity shots:

Prepping a fire to make some trail coffee. I use a stainless steel Filzer bottle for this, and it doesn't take very long at all. Just place on a flat surface, surround with dry tinder and small kindling, and ignite with a spark and PJCB. Since it was so dry in the vicinity, we were careful to practice good fire management, and we made certain that our ash was cool and damp before heading on. Lesson from this outing: Good fire prep starts before your fire (location selection and materials gathering) and finishes after your fire (ensuring that everything is out).

For the spark, I use my JK fire kit

And a nice Trillium shot, for my fellow Ontarians.

Thanks for looking, and all the best,

Awesome pics. Clever idea starting your fire around the bottle. I never woulda thought of that, woulda just got a fire going and stuck the bottle in it after the fact.

I wish I could be out there exploring like that. Finals week is next week and I'm just too darn busy! Thanks for sharing, at least I can live vicariously through everyone on this site for a while. :D

Great pics, Mike. Cool JK firekit. Is it a baby anniversary knife? I have one with an ewok.

Thanks! This seems to work well, and it certainly balances better. Plus, you can get a good, even burn all around the container, which seems to help things to boil faster.

Is the water with all the stumps a beaver pond?

I didn't see a dam there, but there was evidence of beaver activity in the area. The clearer pond that is posted before it was definitely inhabited by beavers - two dams visible.

It's a baby Hudson Bay. I asked John to give me a miniature version of my 7" HB.

What kind of Hardwood tree's are in those Pics?

A mix of maple, beech, and birch, with a few oaks thrown in. The patches of birch are surprisingly large, compared to what I see in my neck of the woods.

All the best,

- Mike

Its always nice to see that im not the only one in Quebec doing that kind of activity.. most of the time, my brother and I go in Mauricie (near the national park) but outside the preserved zone .. to camp and hike in the wild.. we went last weekend with zero bug repellant and I came back with a lot of bites all over! :) At least, our Warbonnet BlackBirds hammock give each of us a source of bug-free environnment to sleep in and there is a good deal of natural water source that don't even need to be boiled to drink in Mauricie.

I like the liberty of doing what I want in the wild vs the various trail and national park where fire and camp must be done at specific location..

Thanks for the pictures Mentor!
