Hiking Big Bear CA in early spring

I have been preparing for my down and up in a day hike of the Grand Canyon which is coming up soon. I have hiked in the San Bernardino Mountains since I was 4 years old. It is a beautiful place and there are some good hikes and some decent peaks between 8,00-9,000 feet. A little on the dangerous side for those not familiar with the area. Here is just another day hike from yesterday.

This is actually the trail

Approaching from the other side this is a little dangerous because it just looks like a hill of snow until you walk on it like I did.

A few critters were out too. The trail has a way of telling a story, who and what was there before me.

Not the safest trail this time of the year

Knee deep in snow, a good way to get a broken leg

Fascination with mountain lions. A track from the Ranger station.

If the trail was visible it was a little submerged

Clearing some blown over trees blocking the trail.

Can you spot the trail?

Great pics as usual. I really love that area, reminds me of the sierras but is a lot closer.

More fantastic photos Reuben, thanks for sharing them. All of them were really nice but I think I liked the one of the darkened skies best.

Hey man...nothing like hiking through beautiful areas with a beautiful woman to accompany you and take pics. hard to ask for a better trip isn't it?

great pics Ruben.....Ive been all over that area. Its where I learned to mountain bike...

Good stuff bear. A good friend of mine did the Grand Canyon down and back up again in a day a year or so ago. I think it was at Bright Angel, 18 miles and 5K ft down and back up again. You'd better get in shape! That would be a really sweet hike though.

You or her?

Sorry, couldn't resist.
The answer is...Yes!
great pics, still have snow!!!!!
Plenty of it, it will stay until June.

Thanks for the pics. I lived in nearby Lake Arrowhead for about 6 years and I really miss it there.

Well, of course. I should have known that.:D

I grew up in Orange County (Newport Beach, mostly) and spent a lot of my early years around Big Bear and Arrowhead, and your pics brought back memories. Oh, by the way, did I mention that they're great pics, as usual?

Thanks for sharing with us.

I appreciate it!

I was in Lake Arrowhead the night before the hike. Big Bear and Green Valley, that whole area is my childhood.

Awesome pics! I spent 4 days in the Grand Canyon last week and I have to say you're a major hiking stud if you go down and up in one day. Pack light and protect your feet cuz it's a two day hike for us mere mortals;) It was my first trip there and I was awestruck by how beautiful it is. Isn't the great outdoors awesome?!! We are truly blessed to live in such a beautiful country.
