Hey all, it's been a LONG time since I've been on here. I number of years back (maybe 5-6 years) I picked up a 3 Finger Karda from Andy in Orange G-10 with black liners. A good friend of mine talked me out of it about 4 years ago and I have been Fiddleback-less ever since (what a terrible state to be in). Well I got the itch bad about a month ago and started looking over the available models. The Hiking Buddy quickly floated to the top as a model that I wanted to try out. I settled on this natural canvas version with natural canvas pins and yellow and natural canvas liners. This was a little bit of an odd choice for me since I typically fall hard for gorgeous wood but I really love the clean look of this combo.

I paired it up with an Insider pocket sheath and I couldn't be happier with the package.

On to the pictures...

Love those liners!

I picked up the knife Friday and it has not left my pocket since!

Great to see you back Matt! It's about time. It's ironic that you started this thread. I was going to ask you just last night what you picked up during your travels up to the lands of DLT and Knives Ship Free. Like we discussed, you will love the Hiking Buddy! You've been on a natural canvas roll lately. That is beauty for sure. You will definitely have to get some in-use pics posted when you get that out. I'm also curious what you think of new pocket sheaths.

I'd like to hear your thoughts of the other models you might have held or looked at. I know you can't form an opinion from a store counter but do you have your next Fiddleback picked out? :D

A little history on Matt. Matt and I have known each other for years. He and I met over on the Bark River forum that is now, for the most part, gone. We talk now on various knife pages on Facebook. We did a grind-in together at Bark River a few years back. Matt has excellent taste is knives.

We have so many great reviewers here. Like I envy and respect them, i have always admired his talent for bringing a knife right to your living room with his pics and reviews.

Welcome back Matt, this is exactly your kind of place. You wil be a great asset here.

That is a great looking Hiking Buddy! I like the HB model a lot. I have tried it with a few different handle materials and grinds. One day I will run across the right tapered 5/32 version and have the money at the same time :)

Matt it was great meeting you and your brother. I had a great time talking knives and showing you guys what we had. It's also nice to see how much you are stoked about the knife, I've seen the pics all over facebook too. The sheath is a great fit too, had I known you'd be carrying it like that I could have tagged it with the logo.

Welcome back and that's some fine canvas micarta. The sheath is rather interesting too. Can you please explain the external tab? Thanks.

The external tab incorporates the use of magnet(s) to hold the sheath onto the pocket.

If I can add to the question; Matt, do you recall if that was Large Sharp Shooter Insider? I was actually eyeing these and am glad to see it in action with a Hiking Buddy. Thanks for the post and pics! Link to sheath on DLT Tradiing

Thanks,
Jerry

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and comments on the knife!

MajorD - Dave thanks for the warm welcome and the kind words. I am excited to be back on a forum regarding knives, I really miss the conversations we used to have in the past. I will definitely get some actions shots and post some updated pictures along the way. Part of my reasoning for going with the canvas version was that it would leave me no excuse to use it, plus as you mentioned I have been on a little natural canvas kick lately (see picture below of my last three). I looked at a handful of different models - the Bushcrafter, Patch and the EDC II were the models that really stuck out to me. I should have got the Recluse out, I've always liked the looks of that knife. Out of all those, the decision came down to the Hiking Buddy and the EDC II. I really loved both knives and tried like crazy to figure out a way to bring both home with me but I knew I was making a couple when up at Bark River. I think the EDC II will be my next purchase and then I will probably go with something a little large after that. I'm sure there are a bunch of other models that will catch my eye once I hang around here a bit more.

I really am digging the new Insider sheaths. I've tried all the various pocket sheath options and I think this is by far the best design. My new setup spent 4 days in a row in my front jeans pocket including a 440 mile car ride and I basically forgot about having a fix blade in my pocket as soon as I put it in there. That tells me it's working. With the magnet it stays put, which takes care of one of the beefs I always have with pocket sheaths.

This was just a quick photo in the hotel this weekend and I need to get a better picture of these once it stops raining but here are my last 3 that I have picked up.

Vance - dang that would make a good companion knife to the Hiking Buddy!

Eric - I really appreciate the time you and Paul spent pulling out all those knives and going over some of the different makers that I hadn't had a chance to get my hands on. It was awesome meeting you and Paul and just chatting with guys that are into the same stuff as we are. When I asked Jason about the Insider sheath I wasn't originally thinking I would carry the Hiking Buddy in it but after we got it in the sheath I fell in love. Having both carry options will be a plus, I can think of some scenarios where I'll want it to ride on the belt. I was so overwhelmed with all the options I didn't think to have you tag it either.

Trestle/Warrior108 - Jerry is correct, the tab has earth magnets in it. Essentially it's a magnetic clip - works like a charm and doesn't tear up your pants like a metal clip will over time. I can take some additional pictures of the sheath if you guys would like. Jerry that is indeed the large size. It is a great fit for the Hiking Buddy but it was extremely tight going in the first time. It's still a snug fit but it is breaking in nicely. The sheath also have an earth magnet inside it so it grabs the knife as it is going in (or keeps it from falling out depending on how you look at it).

This sums up my weekend - Hiking Buddy, Kalahari Sportsman that I built and a Petty Z that I built.

Couple liner shots of the two I built...

Herringbone micarta, thick natural canvas, white

Claro walnut that I supplied, toxic green, thick natural canvas...

The knives you made look great. I'm not a big fan of the white pinstripes but I like it as a liner on your Kalahari. Thanks for the info on the sheath, it looks like another good option for a pocket sheath.
