I was wondering how many of you have a dedicated bug out bag and a seperate camping/ hiking bag, and if so, how do they differ. Due to a lack of funds to put out for duplicates of gear, my hiking bag and gear doubles as my bug out bag. I do keep a few extra things in my car that don't go on hikes with me, but could easily be throw in the bag in an emergency situation.

My Bob/72 Hour Kit is made up of my Backpacking gear. I just keep my Blackhawk Ruck packed all the time. If I need it for an emergency or a spur of the moment campout, it's always ready. I keep a core set of items in it all the time and switch out other items depends on my needs at the time. Add a Bow saw and Axe if I know major trail clearing will be involved, or more food if it's a 4 day trip VS a 2 to 3 day trip. Cold weather gear for this time of year or lighter stuff durring the main camping season.

My day bag which is military belt, Y-harness, Buttpack and pouches which doubles as an emergency kit. If I'm out in the woods for the day and something bad happens stranding me there over night, I like to have what I need to survive and thrive! This kit also has a small Core set of gear.

My Core set of gear includes a 1st Aid Kit, Tinder Pouch, Flashlight and Head lamp with spare batteries, a poncho and space blanket depending on the weather. Trail food, water, water treatment and some way to boil water. Powdered Juice mix, hot chocolate and herbal tea. Twine, leather gloves, mittens and a knitt cap are also in there. These things don't take up tons of room and are really usefull even if you don't get caught in an emergency. And if you are caught by an emergency, you are much better prepaired.

The skills to survive and use the gear you have are also really important. So regardless of what your setup is, Learn to use it.

I keep a B.O.B./G.H.B. in my Vehicle , carry in & out daily... I never just leave it .
& I have a totally dif camp/hiking bag with gear as well

You are probably the best prepared because you actually use what is in your pack. You know what you need and what you don't.

I've seen a lot of bugout bags put together that look like nothing has ever been used.

I'll admit I have a pack that stays in my truck all the time. It is packed with what I think I need to get home if I'm away when SHTF but it is also packed so that if I get stuck spending the night someplace I won't be uncomfortable or hungry.

My pack that I actually use is the one I'm most familiar with it's contents and how to use them.

During a recent power outage I just grabbed my pack. Got out my esbit stove and whipped up a mountain house for dinner. :D

my hiking pack is the same as my b.o.b. i'll just toss in more freeze dried food or energy bars inside (it's stored in a container right next to the pack so i'm not wasting time). i do have a separate bag that's strictly for guns and ammo so in my case i have 2 b.o.b. but no overlaps in the gear they contain.

Mine is one in the same also. I test and use all of my equipment. The contents change a little from season to season and depending on when and where I am going.

Separate bags, with similar or identical gear. I have a Get Home Bag/72 hour kit that stays in whatever vehicle I’m in. It’s not the most comfortable pack for walks in the woods so I don’t use it as much for that.

I will say that I take things out of my car bag from time to time and put it in my hiking pack. This gives me an opportunity to use those items and be familiar with them and also gives me opportunities to find out that some gear is expired, or broken, worn out, etc.

Ideally, I’d like to have one bag that I carry in the woods all the time and then throw in the car to have as my GHB, but the contents varies so I’d have to accommodate that. For instance when I’m going for a woods walk, I don’t want to carry 3 MREs and a gallon of water, or my tool kit and so on. So each time I would have to unpack these items. At times I consider putting those other misc. items in a separate stuff sack where I could put them in the car, then add them to my pack if I needed to.

As time passes you will continue to accumulate bits and pieces of kit....eventually you will have several bags just like the rest of us....but for now most of you gear will probably change out easy....

I just keep my camping pack handy. I find it easier to refine my gear as I use it, and keep things fresh and maintained. I feel more confident taking equipment that I've broken in and become familiar with

I have a dedicated BOB within easy reach in the house, I have a dedicated GHB made out of a Maxped Versi Jumbo. I have various other day packs and ruck sacks for camping, hiking, and kicking around.

That said, if I go camping, I may take something from my GHB or BOB to try out or just to keep stock rotated, but by and large, the packing of them is done and they wait, hopefully, to never be needed.

A BOB has everything you think you would need for a determined period of time - enough to get you to a safe place or enough to GOOD and wait for the "all clear"... most say 72 hours, but if you saw how long it took to 1) get to a safe place & 2) wait until the "all clear" was given post Katrina, you'll see that those values can be VERY subjective. It's up to you. There is no *rule* to follow.

If a BOB is not packed and ready to go, then it's not a BOB - it's just a "partially-filled container that may or may not get you out of a pinch."

My BOB is my camping stuff to some degree. I use the same pack but would add some creature comforts for camping.

Tony is the Kit guru....he has lost more kits then the rest of us will ever see....I bet he has kits that he has forgot about....heck,,i bet his kits have kits they have forgot about....lol....All joking aside...if i have a kit question..Tony is the first one i would call.....

I think some of it depends on where you live. For instance, I'm not going to hoof it out of Brooklyn with an axe and a machete strapped to my bag, which are things I take camping.

I have a dedicated BOB that is pretty extensive and stocked. I keep enough in there calorie wise to keep me going for at least 5 days should the worst happen. Blame it on the Boy Scout or Marine in me. I also have a camping/outdoors pack that has pretty much the same equipment just less of it in a Maxpedition Falcon II. I've used everything in my bug out bag and know just how it all works. Some of it may be new, but I own it and use it in my other pack. One of these days I'll get around to posting a thread of what's in there. It's a Kifaru X-Ray pack with a mid-long pocket on each side, and an organizer on the back. Here's a few pics of the outside:

I pretty much carry what everybody else does but I do have winter specific bags that go in the vehicle when the seasons change.
