I headed to an area where I used to mountain bike many years ago. Where there used to be some excellent trails there is now a shopping center and a bunch of houses :grumpy: But there are still a few nice areas in between all the build up. Pretty weird to be in this setting...

With a Walmart just a few hundred yards away!
Tons of people around too, but I tried to stay off the beaten path.

Huge blow down

This pile of debris was huge, and I saw lots of rat droppings around. I could hear thm moving around inside too

Some nice taggers decided we didn't need to know what to give caution to

The nice little stream eventually gets to this huge tunnel going under the street. Walmart and a huge shopping center are literally a block from here

I found some remnants of a house or cabin

On closer inspection there was some cards from a funeral and a pic of a guy. Don't know what that's about

Cruising down the trail, a red tailed hawk swoops down about 20 feet in front of me and grabs a squirrel. I fumbled for my camera, and luckily he landed in a near by tree. He was way up high though. You can just barely make out the squirrel draped over the branch

Grabbed some video of it. I apologize for the shaky spots, had a bunch of black flies swarming me.

In the end, poor little bugger didn't get to be a meal, but he didn't live either. I'm sure something else will eat him

It was a fun little hike, even though the trail was kind of crowded. And seeing the hawk grab the squirrel that close up was really cool!

Looks like a Red shoulder hawk. Im surprised he didnt finish it. I always see them around here grabbing squirrels. They are my partners in controlling the population.

That is free survival food right there. Fresh killed without any energy wasted on my part! Luckily I had already eaten :D

Damn, I hoped you would of snagged it for a snack.....sloppy seconds :D

You're right, it was a red shouldered hawk. I waited a while to see if he picked it up, but he eventually flew away.
