Yesterday we drove out to Joshua Tree National Park for the day, about 3 hours away and totally worth it. Most of the park is like being inside a surrealist painting, massive fluid shapes in the rocks on all sides, all sorts of bizarre shapes and forms throughout the landscape. I was planning on shutterbugging all day, but my camera ran out of juice early in the morning so here are a few shots of the early part of the trip:
Later on we hit up Skull Rock, which totally looks like a gigantic human skull, and as the sun went down our hosts asked me to help out by getting a fire going. Of course my eyes lit up as I ran over to my pack and busted out my BK11
First time batoning wood, and that little knife worked like a champ. Made small and medium kindling as well as a nice 3 way split in a decent chunk of wood for med-large burning. To start it off I shaved one of the kindling bits down to curly shreds. Best fire I have ever made, that thing was awesome. My girlfriends stepfather was impressed with the technique and the bladework, now I know what to send him for Christmas...
Today my sweatshirt still smells like the campfire and I'm just smiling whenever I catch a whiff.
