Hiking, killer bees, knives, scenery--oh my!

I did an 11 ½ mile hike this weekend in the Cleveland National Forest in Southern CA-Verdugo Trail. The highlight of the hike was when we came across the most aggressive, angry bees I’ve ever encountered. Once we saw them it was too late—they were on us like white on rice on a paper plate in a snowstorm (Major Pain). It was ugly for a while. I only got stung twice and needed the help of my trusty Vic SAK to help with stinger removal. I’ve been stung by some pretty nasty things but this was right up there with fire ants in Peru. After I used the tweezers to remove the stingers, it burned for a long time after. Casualties…one small neck knife was lost in the scurry to get out of there. I am lucky I don’t panic in silly situations, but, I can’t say the same about my hiking partner. Let’s just say, she was a bit shaken up. Besides that, the hike was great full of scenery and mountain lion scat. Hope you enjoy the pics!

The hero of the day award goes to the tweezers on the Hiker!

Awesome pics. That's a nasty looking sting.

That was a nasty looking sting, and another reason why I ALWAYS carry a tube of Orajel with 20% benzocaine in it. Kills the pain NOW, and life is good again.

Great pictures, thanks for sharing.

How did you get that Dave Canterbury knife? I'm a TOPS dealer and they have not released them to us yet? You must have gotten it straight from TOPS. Looks cool. I'm almost tempted to order one just to see it in real life. Just don't know if it is worth the extra $80 it will cost me to do it. Hmmm.

Great pictures by the way. Thanks for sharing.

Nice pics. Looks like a beautiful place.

A friendly word of advice though...it would be better to scrape the stinger out with the blade on your SAK, than to use the tweezers to pull it out. Using tweezers can actually squeeze the stinger and cause more venom to be injected.

Great pics; glad you're ok.

My girlfriend is always the one to stop me from walking down a path where there are bees. It's cut some hike's short, and I am usually despondent, saying: "It will be fine, don't worry." But it's the right thing to do. Getting killed by a swarm of bees would just be embarrassing.

I have heard that, but, have you ever tried that on a jittery, panic stricken, busy body? It would have resulted in a bigger problem by me shanking her in the back.
Awesome pics. It looks like a great time except for getting stung by bees.

It was a great time. We were just out for some desert mileage and we got a good 11 plus.

Thanks for reading it. The course and just being there was about the most fun I've had in a long time. I wish more people would check out that article and want to go see for themselves. The boys in Alabama, along with the help of Patrick Rollins from Georgia (Hobo Jack), really have a good thing going on down there. Survival training, learning the best way possible---the fun way!

You got all the luck BTD, all my hiking companions are smelly, hairy men, that don't run from bees, but go over and tease them into stinging. Man, some guys have all the luck. . . . . . . . .
