went hiking yesterday in the white mountains in NH. Hiked up Mt. Lincoln and went across the ridge trail to Mt Lafeyette. Man I had two mid weight fleece layers and a shell, I was like no way will i need all of this. Well, I wound up wearing it all!! There was still snow and ice up there and on the ridge line trail above the tree line it must have been like 30 degrees with the windchill. Anyway, I brought my rc3 dt with me, didnt wind up needing it for anything but I tell ya its a really cheap insurance policy. If anything happens to you way up there and your not prepared, you are totally screwed. the rc3 is so light and small I didnt even notice it was there in my pack all day.

A lot of people are fooled by the White Mtns, dcycleman. Glad you weren't.

I recall leaving the base of Mount Washington one July day, temperatures in the high 90s, humid and dead calm. By the time I arrived at the summit a half-hour later (auto road) it was spitting rain and 49 degrees, with winds gusting over 60mph.

On four wheels, on two wheels and on foot, some of the nastiest weather shifts I've ever seen have been in the Presidential Range.

My RC-3mil will be accompanying me to the Whites in the next week or so (trying to bag all the peaks in the next couple years) and on the planned thru-hike of the Cohos Trail in late June/early July.

As already mentioned, the high altitude summits have a microclimate all their own- heed the "it can snow any day of the year". At least on Mt Washington there is the lodge where you can warm up... :)

The ridge run between Lafayette and Lincoln is gorgeous country.

thats cool, I havent done washington yet, so thats my next destination. hopefully within the next two months. In the meantime my rc3 is going with me to the St lawrence river up on the Canada/NY border. Gonna do some camping and hopefully dive the river ,weather permitting, heard there are quite a few wrecks.

Spent every Summer between ages 6 and 13 in the White Mountains.

Mt. Washington is excellent - Tuckerman's Ravine is a really rewarding hike. We used to have snowball fights well into the summer :D

Mt. Washington actually holds a record for the highest surface wind speed ever recorded - don't quote me but I think it was 231 mph.
