my better half and I rented out a little Forest Service cabin for a couple of nights to get some late season snowshoeing (me), cross country skiing (her) and pawing (Beve McQueen)

the "Hikers"- JK Hiker and JK Hiker Backup

the first order of business (as no one saw fit to leave an kindling in the kindling box) was to get things ready for the "All Nighter" (stove lived up to it's name!)

kindling making was a breeze w/ the Hiker

need a few fuzz sticks to light the fire

short shoes

some (a lot) of the snow was crusty on top and powdery below- the skis sailed over most of it, the snow shoes posted holed through a lot of it

things were evened up when we went off trail to enjoin another trail to make a loop, a few choice words uttered by the better half on the skinny shoes when heading off the ridge through some downed timber

we thought we spotted a lion at one point, turned out it was Beve McQueen posing on a rock :)

the cabin was well stocked, save a cork screw- w/ a leatherman and a coat hanger we made the best of it

I surprised my wife by doing the prep work for one of her signature breakfasts- veggie browns- diced cooked veggies on a bed of hashbrowns w/ a layer of cheddar cheese

the Hiker (unsharpened after a batoning a large box of kindling and several fuzz sticks) still made for easy slicing

I left the Backup pretty much untouched as I get a better feel for a knife using just one, the Backup will get it's day in the sun soon

three days of snowshoeing, skiing and pawing was a blast- everyone was plenty sore, but happy

thanks John for a pair of dandies!

Nice pics, but what I really like is that improvised corkscrew:thumbup: :D

Hi mtwarden -

Cool!

Thanks for the great pics and review of the JK.

I should be getting my Survival kit in the next couple of weeks. I'll try my hand at some fuzz sticks when I get the new knife.

Thanks again for the pics -

best regards -

great pics!

I'm surprised there is no damage or vandalism to that cabin.......we had a bunch cabins here in BC that one could hike too and sleep in, but local drunk rowdys saw fit to crap in/on the stoves, tear off lumber for firewood and in a few cases, burn them down entirely.

great pics, great lookin pair of knives, I'm gonna have to get me some of them JK knives, you guys are killin me!!!!!

Nice improvised corkscrew, but a SAK Rucksack will save that work. I would probably have been lazy and just pushed the cork in.

Was that pinot noir pretty decent?

thanks gents

I have to admit I was pretty tickled w/ the cork screw :) my wife thought we'd end up pushing the cork in (as did I to be honest), she was pretty impressed

that Pinot Noir was very good- we had that the first night w/ grilled steaks and mushrooms, marinated veggies on spring greens and a great loaf of artisan bread

the Pinot Grigio was pretty good as well- had that the next night w/ grilled salmon :)

I usually have quite a few pics, but somebody

<-----

forgot to charge the battery in the camera, so that severely limited the photo taking

here's a couple more

we've been very lucky w/ this cabin- very little vandalism over the years (knock on wood)
