Hi guys -

A good friend of mine and me explored the little park I told you about in the Gathering "date thread".

It was sunny and around 38f here today, so we took some JK's, some fire starting materials, water and teabags and set out to explore the park.

A view of the largest lake.

I discovered what an excellent chopper my JK Gambler's Bowie is when I cut some smaller saplings down and chopped some wood

Spring is near - the Trillium was up in places. The plants that were up were small, as compared to my JK Small Simple Scandi -

If you can find one of these, you will always have an emergency whistle. I'll show that to the folks at the gathering, unless you already know about that.

Something had been gnawing on a deer bone:

Deer had been drinking at this location

Found a possum skull - decided that is where we would have a fire and make some tea.

I had my JK Gathering goodies, the starters that Zenful made, the tinder kit that jds1 put together for attendee's of last fall's gathering, and my mini survival kit from my truck:

A little peek of color is nice to see:

Jake found a nice piece of rotten log to use as the bowl for our fire and then proceeded to make tinder using the JK Kephart. He liked that knife.

Jake use the JK Scanduckie and JK Firesteel (more gifts from John at previous gatherings).

The SSS is very handy, and handsome as well!

We had fire in about 4 minutes after Jacob prepared the tinder

We heated up our water after making some green-sticks to lay across the fire

Here is a view from a shelter, showing the lake down the hill, and the grill.

Just down the road a piece is a small local short-line railroad's yard, and some antique locomotives that are still in use'

We finished the day back at my house with a Bourbon County Stout.

Mqqn,

Those pictures are amazing. Thanks a ton for sharing them. Your JK "Gambler's Bowie" looks awesome!!! Also, you have great taste in beer. I just had a Goose Island Bourbon County Brand Stout (Vintage 2008) a few nights ago..

That place looks perfect for The Gathering. Thanks for scoping it out!

Jeff

Looks like a great day. I'm jealous.

Good to see you got out, and got a chance to use your knives! Got to love the one and only Scanduckie!

Fun times for sure mqqn! I had a good time and am looking forward to when we'll do that again. There's a lot more land to explore out that way, that's for sure.

Almost forgot to add, very nice JK knives. Now I need to pick out which one I want to get!

Nice pics Andy! It's about time for it to warm up a little. This 30ish degree weather sucks!

Looks like an excellent time, great pics. I agree with outdoorsfan, get some nice warm up time. We need those 60-70 degree days back again.
