Hiking with Kephart

The Bark River Kephart that is. Yesterday, I got a chance to go for a little hike in Rocky Mt. National Park accompanied by my relatively new Kephart. There is still a fair bit of snow at the higher elevations from the storm 2 weeks ago.

The Kephart is scary sharp and satisfies my romantic streak when I'm feeling "old school".

One of the things I noticed down lower was this Ptarmigan who was confused about the seasons and how this camoflage thing is supposed to work:)

I never could warm up to the Kephart. It's not because it isn't a good design. And I know Bark River knives are well made. My reason is silly. The blade looks exactly like the blade on an old US Army Mess kit knife. So my "old school" knife is the Mountain Man. .........which looks exactly like my mother's old butcher knife. So enjoy that mess kit knife. I bet it cuts a lot better than the army one did.:D

Nice pics. I love RMNP and this is a great time of year to be there. Any Elk?

Thanks for the pics! I meant to pick up one of the new full tang barkie kepharts, I had the stick tang and sold it a while back, but I liked the handle surprisingly well.

Very nice - I'm jealous of that white sprinkly stuff you have over there, even ice flows!

Yes, lots of elk, but actually they are down in the valleys (and causing traffic jams in town) not up on the mountains. My first morning after I crawled out of the sleeping bag I was surrounded by a herd of cows and spikes grazing around my campsite. On the mountains there are more mulies than elk.

Horndog, I never thought of the similarity to a messkit knife before, but I will say that this Kephart is one of the best knives in the kitchen that I own. So I suppose it is a good messkit knife:)

I was one of those war babies that grew up playing with WWII stuff. I'm sure Horace Kephart would be proud that the US Army chose his design for such an important role in the war. I'm sure it's a fine knife.

Speaking of elk, I saw this decent one today while out for another walk in RMNP. The funny thing is that all the biggest bulls hang out within the town limits of Estes Park. Safe from hunters there.
