My newest shooting buddy, a girl from work, (they're not all bad) came by my parent's house today so we could go shooting. I showed her my measily collection of knives swords and khukuris. I then took her and my beloved Malla out into the woods and we chopped up some old stumps and a gigantic vine that couldn't have been doing anything good to the poor tree that was serving as it's host.
She fell in love, and now wants to save her pennies up for an HI khukuri. This is after she said "I don't like knives that curve like that." That of course was before she used one.

She needs something lite and easy to wield, but with enough chopping power to be impressive. An idea of how lite it needs to be, she needed to use both hands to hold my Malla when chopping the vine.
Oh, and she's getting better with pistol, this is only her second time and she managed to get a 2 shot grouping in the center ring at 50' firing .22 minimags out of a Ruger Single-Six.

What do you folks recommend???

Bob

A BAS might be a good choice. They usually weigh in at about 1.25lbs. How much does your malla weigh, Bob?

Bob, she might like a Dhankuta. It's a nice looking lighter knife. And yes, do what good ol' Wal said, marry her!!!! Females that like this stuff are far and few between!! I just married mine, she was way to good to pass up!!!!

Hi Bob,
My Malla weighs approximately 1.75lbs. That's taken off of the bathroom scale. It's 18.5" long, and balances just under two inches from the bolster. Man, I love my Malla, Sanu did a great job on it, I need to get more of his work.

Here's what I was thinking she would like, 18" Kobra or 15" Sirupati. I think the Kami With No Name could do a great job on a khukuri for her. Oh well, she won't be buying anything for a while. She makes less than I do!

Bob I haven't had a chance to cut with my new Dui Chiara Chainpuri and it weighs in at 1 Lb 9 Oz, but I have a feeling it's gonna be one helluva cutter!!!!
The nice thing is the way it's balanced!!!
It sure doesn't "feel" as heavy as it is!!!!
I will try to do a quick chopping test tomorrow in the little woods out back and let you know more after that.
The YCS also is very light due to its fullers and as I've said before,
"It cuts like a much heavier khukuri."
I haven't tried to split wood with it as yet, but I don't think it will be as good a splitter as the BGRS because of its light weight.
But based on past experience I would recommend either the DCC or the YCS for a lady that can't swing that much weight.
Come to think of it perhaps a 15"AK might not be too much as well.
But I forget what they are in weight.

Uncle Bill, that balance model seems like it would be perfect for Kellee. Anyone who owns one have anything to say about it's chopping effectiveness. Of course, at 13oz, nobody's expecting 20" Ang Kolha performance. Maybe get Sanu, or Durba to do one for her, of course she's going to be picking it out and buying it for herself, I'm just seeking pre-emptive suggestions for her purchase.

Thanks everyone,

Bob

:
Bob I never thought about the little "Balance" model at all.
I can testify that it's not a bad little khukuri, but as you say it obviously doesn't have the performance of the AK's.

But it's as Uncle Bill sorta said,
"It's more of a fighter."
I have carried mine when walking at one of the local nature centers and have cut small, 1 1/4" to 1 3/4" saplings and branches with it.
I think it works as well as some of the Bowies like the Cold Steel Trailmaster and that's not a bad endorsement.

I have bought 3 of them in the past.
I kept the 1st one and gave Barb and my grand daughter each one of the other two.
They don't treat them as badly as I'm inclined to do.

And it does make a nice little lady's khukuri.
And as Uncle Bill has stated about numerous times, Kellee could always trade up to a larger one if she wished.

Welcome to the Cantina and its eccentric inhabitants, Belle and hope you find just the right khukuri. One thing to note, if the khuk that you get doesn't suit you, you can always trade it back for another... Uncle Bill will explain the trade-in policy... when he shows up a bit later this morning.

Harry

Thanks Harry - Bob has told me about the trade in policy- and I love eccentricities so I'm sure I'll be spending more time in the Cantina

Its a UBE that was posted a couple days ago

(Bob said I should hunt you down and get you to give it to me using forms of persuasion that involves guns but i'm supposed to be too much of a sweety to do that)

Firearms will not work on Jim (Kevlar Cape). Being a sweety MIGHT help, but he is old and cagey, so watch out. If he invites you into the cave for "research", or to view his itch...er etchings, slap him and retreat, loudly repeating mantras, Hail Marys, and any feminist slogans which seem appropriate. Tactics are very important at this stage : )
