I saw a similar but slightly altered version of this a while back. The difference was that the hearth board and bearing block were placed side to side between the feet and the cord was worked by the hands. Obviously won't work with a broken arm but working the string with the hands allowed a longer stroke and easier sitting position similar to this method and decreased the time to get a coal.

The guy in the video claimed it was faster, easier and more efficient than the bow method yet has never achieve a coal from it. I have kept in contact with him through youtube.
