I got interested in HI products last summer and have been studying the choices endlessly. It started with a CAK on black Friday but no that wasn’t enough! I kept dreaming of an AK Bowie. So recently I made up my mind to get one with a wood handle and ended up sort of stealth sharking this one:
Overall length 14 7/8”
Weight 30 ounces
Satisal wood handle
Made by Bhakta Kami

I don’t usually do much in the way of reviews because that’s not my thing but the AK Bowie is simply inspiring. Did you ever unpack a new knife and just know that it was exactly right for you? The first thing that I noticed was the awesome fit and finish. The wood handle feels just right and fits my hand perfectly. The finish and look of the wood handle were exactly what I was looking for. Yes the handle is large both in length and thickness but the handle slabs are angled and rounded off along the edges just right for the size. Unlike my other HI knives that seem dry and crying out for finishing this one’s handle seems stained and sealed and feels nice and smooth with just the right amount of warmth and grip to it. When I first started looking at the AK Bowie I was a little leery of the handle shape. All of those concerns evaporated once I pulled the knife out and held it for the first time. The curves of the handle just melt into my hand. Then I started admiring the blade. The mirror level polishing is just stunning. The blade size and shape are just right. For a 30 ounce knife it feels amazingly light, The balance point is about 3/8” forward of the cho. I have numerous production knives but none of them give the look and feel of this handmade beauty. The AK Bowie is pure artistry. I think that what I like most about the AK Bowie is how it blends the bowie design with Nepalese style. I find that uniqueness of design most appealing. I have never seen anything else in the marketplace that has the same appearance. I think about the kamis shaping and finishing these massive blades by hand and I am simply awed.

I was also surprised at how sharp the AK Bowie arrived. With HI, as with any other brand, I have received a fair amount of variation in blade sharpness. We all have different levels of expectation on factory sharpness and the variability in what is shipped seems to be universal. I am not too scientific about my blade sharpness. I sort of grade my sharpness like this:
1) Cuts paper with bit of tearing sound
2) Cuts paper smooth and quiet
3) Easily cuts a smooth “S” shape in paper
4) Easily shaves hair (arm, leg, whatever, I am not putting this AKB anywhere near my face!)
This AK Bowie arrived at about 2.5 on the above scale. It might actually be a 3 but with the thickness of the blade (13/32”) turning the “S” in the paper tends toward tearing if I don’t get it perfectly positioned on the way through. Overall I wonder if that is sharper than a blade of this design and intended use needs to be. Sharpness at level 1 or 2 would still be pretty nasty with 30 ounces behind it.

So how does the AK Bowie fit in hand? See for yourself. Maybe now Yangdu will understand my endless questions regarding handle sizes. I also bought a Kumar Karda because I simply love that carved handle but it is a tad short in the handle for me. I may have to pursue one of those with another inch of handle on it.

My biggest dilemma when shopping for this knife was trying to judge how it would fit relative to other knives that I either own or have held. Pictures are great but comparisons are so difficult with single blade shots. I thought that I would offer up a size comparison shot between the AK Bowie, an ESEE Junglas, and a Bass pro Shops Redhead bowie. No snickering as I am certain that many of us have those cheap knives that we just had to have for one reason or another over time. These were the only two other knives in my collection that are anywhere in the immediate size neighborhood of the AK Bowie. The Junglas is another one that feels real good in my hand as one might guess from the above pictures. It is sort of funny how the AK Bowie is shorter than the Junglas yet it doesn’t seem all that much smaller!

I can’t wait to get out and use this bad boy. I will probably also make a nice display case for when I am not using the AK Bowie just so that I can sit back and enjoy looking at it! HI did great coming up with the AK Bowie. Thank you Yangdu for patiently putting up with my stream of questions.

I don't own an ESEE Junglas but I hear it is an awesome knife. I am impressed with how thick the AK bowie is compared to the Junglas though. The spine looks twice as thick as that. I would imagine the AK bowie would be better for chopping and batoning

The Junglas is designed thin intentionally, so it can be pressed into machete use for clearing light vegetation if necessary.

That AK bowie is a beast though! No question about that.

I anticipate that the AK Bowies will be the better chopper. All I meant to show was a relative size comparison for those who might be wondering how the AK Bowie sizes up. By no means is there a comparison of knife functionality as they are all quite different in design purpose.

Greetings RF-My first HI blade was a Bhakta made AK bowie. The AK is,what's the best term...fearsome I think captures it. Substantial without being too heavy, well balanced and light in the hand, razor sharp and ready for nearly any task a knife could be asked to do. Congrats to you-enjoy what I consider to be one of HI's best.

Thanks for your thoughts and pictures on your new knife. I'm sure that it will live up to expectations when you take it out and use it, but let us know how it does anyway. A long life of enjoyment for you both.

For what its worth, here's a link to one of the first reviews of the AK Bowie(aka the Cobalt Special):

Go down toward the bottom of the page to read about the 3/8" carriage bolt.

Thanks stickfred. It was interesting to read that old thread. That explains why the handle is so very good in the hand. Also curious how the opinions then were as now that the AK Bowie is so light in the hand for such a beast.

I don't plan on hacking any carriage bolts but it is reassuring to know that it would likely handle it just fine. Nonetheless I now have a strong urge to chop something up!

Man i want mine so bad now! Ive been waiting sooooo long! LOL! I cant wait until Auntie sends me mine!

Very sweet blade. I have been looking for an older one myself, you don't see much of them anymore. Good luck with it it will serve you well.

Awesome pix, thank you for the kind words

That is a mirror copy of the AK Bowie I just recieved. MIRROR! I did manage to chip the blade on mine hitting a hiddeen nail. No big deal, lots of blade left there. Gives it character. Now I'm just waiting on my Farm knife, 40 oz CAK, and Tritha bowie to arrive at my door. I have a feeling the farm knife will be my most used one yet. Can't say I feel that way though. I'm not as crazy about my AK bowie as I thought I'd be. Don't get me wrong it's an awesome blade, just prefer khukuris more now that I have one. Anyway it will last a few hundred years regardless. Nice blade BTW.

What else you just bought is so funny as tomorrow I expect delivery of a Tirtha Bowie and a Cherokee Rose. With the AK Bowise I also got a Tirtha Farm knife. Talk about character that Farm knife has plenty of it! I've got no regrets on the AK Bowie. It is simply awesome!

I also looked at some of those extra heavy CAKS that were recently offered but decided that they were too heavy for me (at least for now).

I hope you post up pictures of that Tirtha Bowie so I can see the differences in qualities as I still want my own Tirtha bowie knife after I return mine. :p

I make no secret around here how much I love my AK bowie. I have used it to chop up deadfall for firewood, cutting and butchering of meat for dinners, all kinds of camp craft, and even as a pry bar and it has never ever let me down. Totally saved my life at least once, probably more. Its just an amazing unkillable knife. I also have an HI farm knife which i keep in the truck for excursions and I love that one too, also a great chopper.

interesting handle on the AK bowie. half in half out the wood hole
