hello all,
just aquired an old kukri for $30 (can anyone tell me how much its worth and if i got it at a deal?)
i think its a himalayan import kukri but i could be wrong :)

it seems pretty old and it came with a wooden sheath that i do not like very much. it seems to be missing the strap for belt attachment. is there a way to get a new sheath? or a way to make a new belt strap for it?

please help

omg my fiance is going to kill me.... i guess i am addicted to this forum
its her birthday and we are getting ready to go out and im constantly checking this thread every few minutes :) kinda feel bad i bought myself a new knife on her birthday :D

Welcome aboard, and no, it is not a HimImp kukri. It is a typical tourist kukri from one of the bigger kukri houses. It looks like a 15" chainpure model, and they don't ship them with a frog to put on the belt; traditionally it would just be tucked in the sash. The sheathes suck on these, the karda (small knife) and chakma (sharpening steel) are useless. However, the kukris themselves can be quite serviceable. I have one just like it that has seen lots of hard work around the yard.

BTW, nice fishies.

Interesting name...along with the link to where you sell stuff.

Please be careful here...very little tolerance for spam.

You might try reading a bit of the forum before slamming so many messages so quickly.

Welcome to a usually calm place.

Yikes... I don't usually post much here as I just read mostly in the survial section of this forum. Sorry if I offended anyone with my repeatative posting. I didn't think it would be considered spamming. As I stated that's an old website of mine and I don't sell fish anymore. I just needed to post a pic and since I can't upload it directly to the site I did it the quickest and most easiest way possible since I was pressed for time. I should return back to dinner. Thanks

That's a nice little knife. You did great for $30. Chainpuri style handle that looks really well done, and standard bolster. You could have done a lot worse. I have no idea of the quality of the steel, but from the careful work I'll bet it's not that bad and you could get some good use out of it.

oh man im sick of the wooden sheath... cant even draw the damn thing without it sticking

is there anyplace where i could order a new sheath?
any suggestions people?

thanks

You could make one yourself out of kydex, leather or wood. There are many tutorials on this forum. There are a lot of custom leatherworkers around too. Try Leatherface.

I agree with Andy, you might try making one yourself:) Trust me, I am NO leather worker, and I can make a leather sheath that is functional (but ugly as sin on a bad day). And YES, Leatherface does awesome work.

You can also try soaking the scabbard in water overnight, then drive a wooden wedge into the mouth to stretch it open. Let it dry for a few days and it MIGHT fit a little looser.

On a safety note, make sure you aren't wrapping your fingers all the way around that scabbard when you are drawing the blade. They really are just two pieces of wood fitted together and bound in leather. If it's sticking as bad as you say it is it could slip its way between those two wooden pieces, slit the leather, and well..as a guy that has suffered a cut tendon, it smarts like a mothertrucker:D

For some reason, the karda and chakma only appear to be an inch or so long...

Even on small khuks, they're usually about as long as the handle.

Nice khuk's. Is Terry's Sarki shop still open? It seems like it goes in cycles. He does good work to.

WOOOOHOOOOO!!!!!! my sheath problems are over!
i would like to express many thanks to yangdu and everyone else of himalayan-imports!!!

after inquiring about the sheath the past week on the board i was able to exchange a few emails with the wonderful yangdu through himalayn-imports website and sent my knife in for a fitting...

IT ARRIVED BACK TODAY!!! my kukri was reborn in its new sheath lol... not only did i get my knife back with a quick turnaround... she also included a new karda and chakma to replace the tiny ones from my old wooden sheath.

you guys werent kidding when you said himalayan-imports was the best ;)
i cant wait to tell all the guys at work about my experience.
i hope to buy a kukri from them in the future... i will be paying attention to the daily deals from now on :)

check it out :D ... the quality of the sheath, karda and chakma is amazing

here is a pic of the old sheath and karda/chakma :)

THANKS AGIAN YANGDU!!!

Wow, that's great! Really nice touch by Yangdu, and typically thoughtful. Don't know of another company that would supply a scabbard for someone else's knife.

I have one similar to yours with an aluminum handle and the same wood scabbard, but inlaid a bit more. One of the tourist models, but pretty good steel and has seen some use by me. The wood scabbard on mine is super loose, and acts like rails for the blade launching it everywhere. The knife is decent quality though.

Glad it worked out for you, and keep a look at the daily deals. You might find a nice companion to that rig.
