I’ve looked around but can’t find the answers. I know they have made two types. A frame lock and a liner lock. The frame lock i know they have scales available for. The liner lock, I do not see any listed as compatible with them. But, they like very very close to the same as the slip joint scales. Are the slip joint and 3.0 skinny liner lock scales interchangeable? I’m kinda thinking I may want to try a liner lock version and wondering if I have to find the exact color I want or if I can change the scales using the slip joint ones. TIA y’all!

I think all the 3” Skinnies are liner locks and they sell sets of aftermarket scales for them. The 3.5” skinnies are the frame locks. I’d love to find a 3” skinny non-flipper but I don’t think they’ve ever made one.

There's 2 types of XM 3.0 knives.

The newer "Skinny" 3.0, which is a Liner Lock and the older "non-Skinny" 3.0 Frame Lock. That's it.

I've owned/own multiples of both and much prefer the frame lock. The newer Skinny was botched IMO (and others) on how Rick cut the scales (or didn't, actually) to access the lock. It was a ridiculous thumb exercise just to close the knife and I'm amazed it actually got sent out the door like that.

This may have been fixed in later releases, but besides even that, I just preferred the feel of the older Tri-Way Frame locks, FYI.

To my knowledge the Skinny 3.0 scales are not interchangeable with anything.

Thank you for the info and the opinion. That may actually change my mind because I have read the same gripe from one other. That may push me to either a frame lock or a slippy. If they made a standard shaped sheepsfoot slippy, that would be it for me, but the sheepsfoot on it I think looks silly and isn’t shaped right to perform like a true sheepsfoot.

Hinderer did make replacement scales for the 3" skinny, but it's been a few years since they've made the 3" skinny or scales.

The Hinderer Slipjoint scales are not compatible with the 3" skinny. They have two different attachment methods. The slipjoint scales have screwholes in the middle of the scale, so as to not interfere with the backspring, where the skinny linerlock has attachment holes near the back of the handle, like other XM knives.

I daily a 3.0 skinny in a suit. It’s a fantastic little knife. I had custom carbon fiber scales made for it by a guy on Instagram who goes by the name Karbadize. He puts the relief cut for access to the liner lock in the scales. However I did not have a problem unlocking the knife before. I bought the smooth scales because the Hinderer scales were going to shred my dress pants. There is nothing functional wrong with the knife. It’s light, sharp and fits well in the hand. It cuts stuff.

My only gripe about the knife is the price. I got mine used so it wasn’t to bad. It’s not a $300 knife. It’s a $150 knife. But it’s a Hinderer so it’s going to cost you.
