Got a question for you Hinderer aficionados. Got an interesting looking Hinderer inbound, a Magnacut Project X. It has a “Working Finish” (no idea what this means). I found this for a fair price. This is my first decent folder I’ve ever bought. Everyone that is familiar with me knows I’m into mid to high end sharpened prybars and overbuilt fixed blades. Is this a durable knife? How’s Hinderer’s Magnacut? Forgive me, I’m a big time fixed blade guy and know next-to-nothing about folders. Thanks!

Hinderer's Working Finish = sandblasted, then stonewashed.

The Project X should serve you well. Hinderers are excellent knives, and as yours is Tri-Way you can easily swap in washers for extra resistance to grime/dust.
Tri-way? What sorcery is this?!?

Tri way means it’s comes with Teflon washers, bearings, and phosphorus bronze washers.

Like all the other steels they use they run Magnacut softer than they should.
So I’m assuming that HRC is around 59-60 as opposed to 62-63 that’s recommended for Magnacut.

Here is Larrin just a couple of days ago on the subject: “61-ish is a good target for blades that want to favor toughness.”

There is hearsay - no actual data - that Hinderer runs MC at 61. He uses Peter’s, that’s documented.

Congrats on the Project X. I have several of its siblings - Fulltracks - great knives. Slicier than you might expect, for example slicier than an XM24. Great companions to our CPKs :)

Working finish is very durable.

And - as said above - if you don’t like it, you can sell it at profit.

Congrats on the Project X!
The working finish is great for hiding scratches, you can carry it for a long time and it won’t look all beat up.
And it may not feel as slippery when it’s cold out or if your hands are sweaty, that’s what I’ve noticed for ALL the working/“battle” colors…
Here’s a cool video made by USA Made Blades, that describes all the different finishes

Man I wish I were the OP, who can spare $500+ on a folding knife without even knowing if it is a good one ;) But to your questions, as others have already answered, Hinderer folders are among the best high-end production folders nowadays in the market. Congrats on getting a Project X (which is on my to-buy list).

I really like the working finish, but it’s all a matter of preference. As stated above, the Magnacut heat treat is often argued. I doubt most users will differentiate between 61 and 63. Rick Hinderer hurt some feelings so some folks are catty about the knives in general.

Hinderers are built like tanks and every part can be replaced, as you wish. If you don’t like it, you can likely resell without losing much money, if any. (Feel free to PM me if you want to sell quickly. 😉)

Great answer! I doubt I’ll ever sell it, I bought this knife because this is one of 3 grail folders for me (other two being a Spartan Harsey Folder and Curtiss F3). I just decided to start getting into folders now, will get the other two at a later date.

Thanks! This will be my main weekend carry knife until I get the other two folders I want. I carry a cheap buck 110 at work. It gets Uber dirty and dusty, and I don’t want to subject the Hinderer to that. Don’t feel like disassembling and cleaning it on a weekly basis lol.

I have acquired a lot of expensive knives in the past year and a half. I have knives I never use that I’ll sell to recoup some of the money. I did a little research on Hinderer, but felt like I’d get better answers if asked directly. I love the look of it, and I’m 99% sure I’ll love it. Hope you get yours soon!

Thanks for the answer! I love the fact it’s overbuilt, that’s how I like my knives (the vast majority of my fixed blades are overbuilt). I’m almost positive I’ll love it, the scale shape is exactly what I was after. I doubt I’ll ever sell it, this is will be my first high end folder I bought myself, a milestone in my knife collecting experience. I can’t wait to get the other two I’m also after.

The silhouette is what got me too, it’s one of their more comfortable folders especially at the butt end.

Ps their magnacut sharpens up and performs just fine.
