Long story short, I'm making a knife for a school project (Physical Metallurgy class) and I'm looking for nice design ideas. I just got my first Hinderer a few weeks ago and it tempts me to model my design after something like the FXM 3.5″, although it’s my first ever knife and I'd probably have to dumb it down a lot. I don't know if it's some hush-hush trade secret or anything, but is there anywhere to find any design specs or engineering drafts/designs of hinderer knives? (the skinner design is sick, but probably way out of my league)

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery but not when it's Copyrighted - Ignore the temptation.
Do good in school.

I see that my previous thread was closed... so I guess I have to make a new one to make a rebuttal.

Original Post (zoomie):

I have to argue with you on this point. Copyright protections do not really apply to my request. Section 107 of the Copyright Act of 1976 states:

§ 107 • Limitations on exclusive rights: Fair use40
Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106A, the fair use of a
copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords
or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism,
comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use),
scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining
whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to
be considered shall include—
(1) the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a
commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
(2) the nature of the copyrighted work;
(3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted
work as a whole; and
(4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted
work.
The fact that a work is unpublished shall not itself bar a finding of fair use if
such finding is made upon consideration of all the above factors.

My request and intent clearly fall under this provision and would not be copyright infringement. (saying all this probably won’t improve my chances of geting info on what I requested, but I like debate and it doesn't hurt to try :D)

I don't think he was so much referring to the legal side of it, rather just saying come up with your own design.

Just copying someone else's work is no fun. Sit down and spend some time coming up with some fresh ideas.

Rick's work is his art.

Best of luck!

I'm not looking at "copying someone else's work." I've never done anything like this before, so I could never hope to get anything close to what Rick does (I'm a Civil Engr major, I deal with dirt and stuff like that). I simply said "model my design after something like" one of his designs. When it's my first, and probably only, time it helps to have some sort of reference point to base my own personal flair and designs around.

If I could close this thread I would. You don't get it buddy, and at this point if you haven't you may never. Your requesting something that equates to asking to see Rick's business model, IMO confidential information. If you're so "inspired" then let your "passion" drive what you create not what someone else has done. By copycats stealing his blood, sweat, and tears--your reaping the benefits of a winning design. Much like a cover band playing a hit song and making no effort to create their own success. Whether it's a one time thing or ongoing. Just food for thought.

I am not amused by this or the other thread. I find the whole topic offensive. For you not to see why is just wrong. There are a lot of Asian made copies as well, don't you think they would like to ask for the designs rather than having to reverse engineer them? At least they weren't rude enough to come here and blatantly ask for the designs.

Zombie this sub forum was created and maintained by Rick Hinderer, I also find it highly offensive that you would come here and ask for his designs for a school project, come up with your own!
