Hinderer DIY Working Finish?

Briefly, here’s my background and what I’d like to achieve:

I have an XM-18 3.5 that I love and carry daily. It’s stonewashed, but I’ve always wanted a working finish XM. I’ve just missed the chance to pick one up throughout the years.

I’ve picked up a complete working finish hardware set from the factory. I’m fine with just putting that hardware in and continuing to enjoy my XM.

However, since it’s coming apart for the hardware swap (and a much needed cleaning), I thought I’d check in here to see if anyone has a DIY recipe for a “working finish-like” treatment of the blade, lockbar, clip, and liner.

I’m practiced enough to do some acid etching, but I don’t have a tumbler. Honestly I could use any advice at all, even if it’s “don’t bother.”

Thanks in advance. I’ll post picks of the project if it makes sense to attempt.

A tumbler isn't absolutely necessary for stonewashing. I just use a large plastic container (from protein shake) with the ceramic tumbling media from harbor freight (actual stones or gravel will also work) and shake it by hand. It's obviously a bit of work, and I've learned to do it when the wife isn't home due to the noise ;), but I've always been happy with my results thus far.

As far as I know the actual working finish is a bead blast and then stonewash, but for the blade I think your idea of doing a light acid etch and then stonewashing could get somewhat close (or at least provide you with a cool look you're happy with).
