Hinderer Extreme Duty; a few questions...

Howdy folks,

I've been eyeballing Rick Hinderer's Extreme Duty pen in aluminum, but I have a couple of questions before I commit to a purchase.

First and foremost... the refills. The overwhelming majority of the dealers offering these pens say little more than "large Fisher space pen refill." Fisher doesn't make a "large" refill; they made SPR# and SU#F refills.

Now, seemingly every other "tactical" pen on the market uses the former of the two refills. I would have assumed this of the Hinderer as well... except that on one lone dealer I found a reference to the SU*F refills.

Anyone know for sure which refill these pens use?
Has there potentially been different batches which use each refill type respectively?

And finally... color. Silly question, really. It would seem Rick hasn't actually named the colors of the anodization on these pens and every dealer has had to make up their own names for them. So, for clarification sake... there are only three color options for the aluminum pens, right? I'm trying to snag one in "black" but the dealer I planned to buy from has them listed as "Royal Blue." Just looking to confirm that there isn't some mystery forth flavor.

Thanks in advance!

I have two ED Pens from Rick Hinderer.

One is black and the other is blue (two different colors)

The refills are:Fisher #PR4B (Black Ink) & #PR2 (Red Ink).

Hope this helps........

Roger

It does indeed, thank you.

Any chance you happen to have a photo of the two side by side?
If not, how might you describe the shade on the blue one? At a glance, is it noticeably blue, or pretty close to black?

I've not yet seen a picture of a Hinderer ED that looks blue enough to be called Sapphire/Midnight Blue, let alone Royal Blue, which is typically a far brighter shade.

Here is a photo off of another forum site!
This illustrates the differences pretty well.

Ahh, excellent. Thanks again, GarciaJr.
Yea, that looks a bit more like what I would expect of "Royal Blue" (and nothing like what the photo looks like at my dealer.) I guess I'll have to email them to confirm.

Knifein,
The aluminum versions of this sell for $80, titanium for around $230.

After hearing back from my dealer on the Monday the 29th, confirming that the pen in question was indeed black and not royal blue, I promptly placed an order. It arrived this past Thursday and shimmied it's way into my EDC lineup.

A few quirks I have noticed,
- The cavity for the refill has been milled out just a tad too long on mine. When I went to write something for the first time, I found that the refill would retract somewhere between 1/16" and 2/16" before hitting the back wall of the cavity. Nothing a tiny wad of cardboard scrap can't "fix," but not what I expected of something designed around this specific refill.
- When capping the pen, you almost need to wrench down on the cap to get some friction on the threads. If you don't, you might just find that the cap has unscrewed itself in your pocket while walking. As with the above issue, this one may well have a quick-fix option as well... in the form of an o-ring. Will have to hit the hardware store in the next couple of days to find out.
- It looks like... maybe... this pen can accept both the regular refill and the narrow refill. There is a hole drilled clean through the body that is slightly smaller than that of the refill cavity; it might be just big enough to accept the narrow refills. Unfortunately these refills are not sold at the local Office Depot, so I doubt I'll get around to testing this anytime soon.

But overall... loving it!
I'm officially sold on these Fisher refills, I'll tell you that much right now.

Fascion,
There is supposed to be a coil spring that is in the tube to prevent the gap and I would assume help with writing comfort. Make sure it is in there if not then shoot Rick an email and get a replacement. As far as the cap.... I had the same problem and I actually ended up sending the pen in to Rick and he put o - rings on the end of the threads for the cap and it has been perfect since.

Ahh, thanks again GarciaJr.
I'll definitely inquire about the spring.

Stopped by the hardware store while I was out today, though. Picked up a 7/16 x 5/16 x 1/16 " o-ring [EDIT: Please see next post for a better fitting o-ring size] and it's working well. It's a bit more snug of a fit than I'd prefer, but it's much better than the alternative of having the cap come off in my pocket.

In the hours after my last post I received a very prompt response from Mr. Hinderer. After a quick explanation of my problem, he agreed that I was indeed missing a spring, at which point he offered to send one my way, in addition to a couple o-rings.

The spring fixed it right up... and the o-rings were a much, much better fit for the pen.

If anyone else is interested in adding o-rings to their ED pen, look for the 6/16 x 4/16 x 1/16 " variety. It's a much better fit than the ones mentioned in my last post. Same thickness, but the smaller diameter stretches it out just enough to remove a bit of the excess friction.

Big thanks again for all your assistance in this thread, GarciaJr.
And a big thanks to Rick for his excellent customer service!
