New to this forum, so excuse any ignorance about models etc. :)

My son is a Sgt in the Army and has done 3 tours in Iraq. He's in HI for 6 months and deploying to Afghanistan.

I've been telling him everything I've heard about the ruggedness of Hinderer knives and he's interested in getting one. I don't know how to do this. It would be my gift to him but to have it made by Rick he'd order it right? Show some sort of proof of his status?

Also, he doesn't like the look of having a colored scale on one side and the tumbled/stonewashed finish on the other. Are there models that have the metal on both sides? Are they too slippery to open without a scale?

Finally, he doesn't want a 3" blade but something in the 3.5"+ range.

And finally (really) don't know about a flipper, he's always used a thumbstud or spyder hole to open the blade on a folder.

Is there any such animal that Rick makes, that would fit these criteria? Suggestions would be welcomed. Thanks! :)

Hello Sir,

If your son is active military and will be deploying soon I'm sure that Rick and Rob will try their best to get him sorted out with a knife. Shooting them a PM/Email wouldn't hurt.

After being deployed to Afghan 3 times and Iraq once myself (unfortunately without a Hinderer knife) I can tell you that this is THE knife you want your son to have with him out there. I know its what I will have with me this next time around. Being a full time cop in Chicago I have already put my XM-18 to VERY hard use (prying, slicing, cutting, scraping, chopping and I've even used it to clear rounds out of jammed rifles and shotguns) and it has never failed me. It just looked back at me and laughed. Its almost like the knife wants to be used hard. Pretty amazing if you ask me. I don't think there is ANYTHING out there that can stand up to Rick's knives! I'd bet a paycheck on that!

Good luck on getting your son a knife.

Tell em to keep his head down and stay frosty.

OOH RAH!

Thanks for that info rickCPD!

I talked to him about it last night on the phone and told him I'd check into it. I appreciate your post and your ongoing service!

Everywhere I go in this forum it's full of active and former Marines. I guess because we like to shoot, chop and blow stuff up! :D

Contact Rob Orlando. The 3.5" XM-18 can be made without the Flipper. But all of the XM-18's have a Synthetic front slab. The Black slab or Marsh green are very low profile. Rick does give military or Law enforcement Top priority. best of Luck. Pete

IMHO you can't go wrong with a Hinderer:thumbup:
Very well made, Always dependable
