Hinderer knife question

I like hinderer knives but what’s really a shame is there’s not one Facebook group or Internet forum you can openly discuss them. If you ask ANY question in the main hinderer Facebook group, the post gets removed and your account gets warned and usually the moderators message you salty and soft as hell…

With that said, I’ll ask the same question here that got me in trouble there…

I received a brand new 3” XM18 the other day and the lockup is right at about 50%. I know that’s fine but it’s def later than my 3.5” examples. I was curious what others’ new 3” XM18s came at?

Thanks!

I have had earlier than that on many older 3" XM-18's but that should be fine if not better. Some are on the too early side. That looks very safe. I wouldn't worry about it.

Do those have later lockup than normal or something?
Not meaning any negativity here but I’m sure there’s a reason you are asking about lockup and I’ve always wondered why people care so much about this topic. Is there a benefit to early or later lockup?

I have a JG Scout that is so early it looks like it’s barely locking the blade in place, that’s when I get concerned. Help me understand what matters if it’s 30% versus 50% if they both ensure there is solid lockup with no blade play. Once again, not arguing, truly curious.

For the entire time Facebook has existed, I have never been a member or user.

Has the sky fallen?

Nope.

Ask your questions and seek what you want here. Crag, David, Nathan et al are all makers you can explore.

I finally found another person who’s never joined or used Facebook!!! Yep, sky is still in good shape. Cheers my friend.

It’s a good question,‘I guess I just want to make sure it’ll be good for “life” and won’t wear out. It’s easy to get caught up comparing to other people’s thoughts on wanting earlier lockup so it’ll last longer. And when a knife it almost $500….ocd comes out.

Just buy 12 more knives, lock up problems instantly solved! Just have fun, its take a long time for lock up issue to be………….an issue.

Ok. I can understand that. I have 3 XM-18 3 inch models. All the lockups look earlier than yours but I don’t think you have anything to worry about if the lockup is solid. Here’s my 3 for comparison and I did throw in a full picture of my BPU XM-18 3 inch wharnncliff 😃.

Usually frame locks settle into a spot and don't move much after that, unless there is a problem.with the lock face.
If it were a Sebenza it would have started at 70% or greater. Hinderer does have earlier lockups, but I don't think that relates to longer lasting.

3.5 skinny and 3.0 XM blades are thinner obviously, so relative lockup is later. Also depends on how tight the pivot is, blade centering, etc. Your knife is not out of spec. Much earlier than the typical CRK, BTW, where this lock was invented.

Nice knives.

Put a little pressure on the locks and you will see them moving towards center, too.

Yeah my sebenza was probably 60% or so, definitely later than this.

I don't think it's cause for concern from a safety or functionality standpoint, but it would bother me because that's about the lockup percentage all my Hinderers have settled at after breaking in. Once they've settled there, they've stayed there; maybe yours will stay exactly where it is, or maybe it'll settle further in and then stay put.

Looks perfectly fine to me, now let loose and cut up!

On a side note I fully agree with you that the fanboys on fb get very defensive and attack anyone with complaints or issues with their favorite makers. Warning, don’t ever make a complaint in the Emerson groups! 😂 As a LG fanboy I make a point to not do the same.
