Hinderer Knives?

I'm seriously considering picking up one of the Hinderer folders.

I have some experience with Strider & Sebs, so I am kind of using them as a reference point until someone steers me a different way.

So far the questions are:

1 - Concerning the blade, to whom would you compare the way Rick treats his S30V, or is there a comparsion?

This won't be a safe queen, so I'd reall like to hear from users.
I greatly prefer Strider's S30V processing methods over Reeve, just seems to sharpen better, hold an edge longer etc and I want to make sure I getting Strider level on the blade or better.

2 - Concerning the lock up when opened, what kind of contact does he usually have - is it full contact (or VERY close) from the base of the blade to to the Ti, or is there a good portion of the blade base that does not have direct contact with the Ti when opened?

Is there any other info someone might have about Rick's knives, or possible comparisons?

Thanks for your help,

sp

I can't really speak to Rick's S30V compared to another maker and I'm not a Seb or Strider owner, but as for lockup, here's a picture of my Firetac...

In general, I say go for a Hinderer if you want one. Rick's knives will take hard use. The quality and design on the Firetac I got is outstanding. It's the most heavy duty folder I have and while my own needs do not push the knife's limits I would have no qualms that it could take a beating and perform as intended.

I happen to have one of Rick's older Firetac's, and it is outstanding!! These knives were meant to be used!! The lock up is rock solid. It is a smooooooooth opening knife! Get one!!

I really like both of my Firetacs although I don't carry them as much as I'd like. You mentioned Striders S30V and how you'd like to stay with that heat treat as close as possible. Did you mean when Paul Bos was doing it? Strider no longer has Bos doing theirs in case you didn't know.
And both of my Firetacs lock up like a vault with a full lock face mating, not just the very corner like my Strider production knives. (The Strider customs locks mate up a lot better than the production ones.)
Plus, you'd be hard pressed to find another custom knife with the same quality that Rick puts out for the price.

I've got some size comparison pics here:

I didn't know that. That's kind of sad. Don't tell me it was due to the cost of shipping their steel out to Idaho?

Who's doing it now?

OilMan,

*nod* Gotcha. I haven't had the good fortune to pick up a new Strider since the Gen 6 SnG from about a year ago, so I'll need to keep an eye out.

(BTW, I don't know whether Spark is gonna want you to remove that link... :()

Thanks for the info!

No worries, I'm not flaming anyone, I'm just telling you where to get better info than mine on Strider Knives.

The Strider Heat Treat is now done in-house as I understand it. From what the Strider guys have said, they went something like 6 months without any heat treat getting done because of the move and Paul's involvement in it. They have said that they're doing pretty much what Buck is doing, and they use Paul's formula and his set up on their steel, Paul's just not personally overseeing the process anymore. It makes sense now that Paul isn't in CA anymore.

Oh, and during the transition they stopped marking the BOS treated ones as well as the non-BOS treated ones because it was too confusing keeping track of which ones were and which ones weren't done by Paul- at least that's how their explanation comes across.

Back on track, Rick uses CNC for his handles and such. This provides for some of the most uniform knives in the Custom realm. RJ Martin does the same for his knives. This means that if you strip a screw you can go to any metal shop and pick up a new one. From what I understand, there has never been a complaint with Rick's S30V.

Just read the Strider Faq again and the heat treat is done outside of the shop but at a place that Paul Bos founded. Either way I haven't heard any complaints on the new HT.

I stand corrected! I, too, have yet to hear about people complaining in regards to the new HT.

Thanks for all the info - I think i'll go for it!
Concerning the S30v on the Striders I have:

One's a PT, and the other is a Gen 6 Tanto - neither have the Paul Bro stamp, but I have been VERY, VERY pleased with whatever process they are using - far exceeds the sebs, or any other S30V blades I've handled thus far.

I know what you mean about some of the lock up on the Striders (all non custom) So far I've had 50/50 luck with a full engagement.

The Gen 6 is at the spa currently getting that up to par. If it comes back the way I asked it to be repaired, no harm no foul.

Thanks again everyone for the help

You will LOVE your Hinderer!! I will be getting an XM-18 myself. Rick IS one of MY favorite knife makers. (My top 3)

Really KnifeCollector? That is the same model I am looking at getting too - I've been eyeing it hard for the last couple of months.
Looks like the perfect compromise with the Ti Liner in the G10.
I think I'm gonna go for the 3".

Would you please shoot me a pic alongside your sebs/ and Striders? - and I'd really appreciate a review from you - can you do that?

Thanks so much everyone for your very kind remarks!...I hope you got your questions answered Barrabas...I do put ALOT of thought and energy into how a folder is engineered than into whether or not it is pretty...first and foremost it HAS to cut and it has to take a beating and keep going...believe it or not sometimes those dont go together...some design their folders to take a beating by upsizing the material, but then they lack in cutting..then again the opposite is true....
I also put alot of time designing the locks on my folders....as was mentioned I utilize opposing angles on my locks...meaning I duplicate the angle on the lockbar to match the blade tang...which makes for more surface area in contact on the lock face....I'm including a pic of me playing around and driving over my XM-18....this is a open back design framelock with a g-10 side/with a imbeded Ti halfliner...Thanks again everyone!!

I don't have my XM-18 yet. I DO have pix of my Firetac & Sebbies, I think. Ooops, I am wrong, I do not have pix of my Sebbies with my Firetac. Sorry.

Can't find his webpage. And I's sure he has one.
Than XM18 is half-G10/half titanium slab, like Strider, right?
