Rick Hinderer released a video showing how he manufactured his 3-way pivot system and how easy it is to swap out washers/bearings.

I think it's a simple solution that has been waiting to be delivered for hundreds of years. You may or may not like the knives, but Rick Hinderer is changing the knife world and he is some kind of genius.

I have 3 Hinderer Knives and I'm in the market for more.

That's very cool. I may be wrong but it's tough to imagine many manufacturers allowing the user to make such mods. Hinderer seems to be catering directly to the serious knife nut. He also seems to be a really down to earth guy.

I find the knife industry in general to be very down to earth. Many CEO's of these companies seem to be regular guys who are living their dream making knives. Even big companies like KAI and Spyderco.

I started to criticize this: He basically just consolidated the dimensions of two different washers and then milled in a pocket for bearings of increased thickness. He didn't invent anything here. He just made it easier to for you to swap them out.

I started to say that, but then I remembered that Sal "REVOLUTIONIZED" the knife world, and god bless him for doing it, by adding a pocket clip... the same thing found on pens and whatnot for decades.

Maybe it isn't exactly genius, but it does show he's paying attention and is working to improve upon a tool that was already damn near perfect. I like it. (If only CRK was paying attention. I don't want an Inkosi, I want a 21 that is above 58hrc!)

Though it didn't catch on, pocket clips have been used on knives since the 1920s or so. Sal struck when the iron was hit and when he put it on his knives the idea stuck.

I have heard that Luong of Bluntcut Metalworks is doing re-heat treats. This may be for certain steels, but the idea has been floated and brought to fruition.

Also, I believe Josh at Razor Edge Knives is doing reblades. If this is the case, commissioning a S35Vn blade from him at a higher hardness is also a possibility. But, at that point it opens up a lot of alloys, AEB-L, M4 and 52100 are personal favorites.

Not really interested in a Hinderer on bearings. The Teflon works extremely well and is very smooth but if he offers the PB washers for sale I’d buy some since the after markets I’ve tried have sucked.

Hope there’s a run of 24s coming

His seem to be the exact same as anything you'd find at a good knife parts store. .50" x .25" x .015". He even said his Teflon washers have stayed exactly the same, indicating that the usual aftermarket size is the same.

All CRK folders in S35VN are run at 59-60 HRC now, and have been since late 2013.
Ok, so above 60hrc! 59-60 is definitely better, but there's better steels and HTs available.

I understand the easy to sharpen idea, but really, how many Sebenza owners are hand sharpening the knife on some old Arkansas stone? It's a $400+ knife. Their owners can afford a modern sharpening system that can stand up to harder steels.

Genius? Not really. Do I appreciate that he caters to the customization market? Sure do. Honestly the quick swap is kinda gimmicky, give me the hardware and I can swap them in any of my knives in a minute as well, and I don't see any kind of situation where you need to "FIELD SWAP UNDER FIRE!" the washers to bearings or back. Just like the Gear Clip and HMBS, it's a nice Gimmick for people who like to tinker and play around. That being said, I am still waiting for an XM-24 with a Lockbar Insert and Bowie Blade. :D
