Hello BF,

All of the 3.5" XM-18's I've owned have had the spanto grind. It may not be the best cutter, however it is the strongest of the bunch. I was wondering, how much better are the other grinds better at cutting in comparison to the loss of strength? Also what is your favourite grind on the XM-18 and why?

I voted for the Spanto but it is close for me. I really like the Harpoon Spanto a ton so I can go either way on this. The Slicer grind is supposed to be the best at cutting but most of my customers swear the Bowie is better.

I haven't owned every model of Hinderer but have a Spanto a Slicer and Spearpoint.

Almost every knife I buy I just hone each a bit if needed with a ceramic hone sometimes just a strop and a few passes ... seems to bring the edge out just that little bit.

And of the 3 ... you can tell a small difference in how they cut ... and for me the Slicer did have a very slight edge ... but I'm not sure it's enough of a difference for me to say it cuts alot better.

But I also can't say any of the Hinderers I've owned or held felt in anyway weak or that one was better built then the next.

Of what I own the Slicer is probably my favorite but have to admit I like the looks of the Harpoon and I love Wharncliffes I just don't need one that nice.

The thinner the blade the better a cutter it is. There is no rocket science here. That is to assume we are cutting normal stuff (ropes, cardboard, etc., not copper pipes or car doors). In that regard, slicer grind will cut better (as the name indicates). My favorite Hinderer grind however is the Bowie. Cutting performance wise I think it is the same as the spearpoint but it looks better and unique (on a folder).

My only Hinderer is an XM-18 Bowie, so I might not have a broad enough experience set...but dang, that Hinderer Bowie is sweet! I voted "other".

I have a Slicer grind on a ZT 0562 and don't find it to be that great of a slicer...

Lol, I'm like what is a Sliver grind?

I've never owned a Hinderer before unless a ZT but to me the spear grind looks like an exact intermediate grind between spanto and slicer.

Yeah haha, soon as I realized I made that typo I was like facepalm... but you cannot change thread names on BF.

Can't go wrong with a Harpoon Spanto! I've read on here that the Slicer grind doesn't make much of a difference in the end, as it's still too thick behind the edge.

Have had the Spanto Slicer and Skinner. I like the Spanto the most have a 3” and a 3.5” in it. Spanto cuts just fine and looks the best. The slicer and skinner don’t cut that much better the slicer is thinner and better towards the tip and the skinner might be thinner towards the choil but still thick at the tip.

Spanto is the most Hinderer and that’s pretty cool.

I like them all , but chose spanto. I am from the era what you got a choice of spanto, spanto or spanto unless you went custom, so that is what brought me to Hinderer.

Aside from the Spanto I really like the Skinner grind too. The Skinner grind has got thay sort of dao shape.

I voted other BC I think the Bowie may have a slight edge over the slicer as my favorite. The slicer has been the best cutter of the ones I've had, but there's just something awesome about the Bowie.
