Hinderer tight detent question?

I have the below Hinderer Jurassic. I love the knife, but the detent is too tight for my liking. I should send it to Hinderer and have them tune it, but I’m impatient ass hell and would like to maybe try myself. What can be done to a tight detent? Anyone try this alone?IMG_8299.jpegIMG_8300.jpeg

Hinderer will not mess with the detent. You can lighten it yourself by taking the knife apart and bending the lockbar out a tiny bit….
Here’s a video on the subject

I mean, it makes sense… they couldn’t get it right the first time so why would they try again?
IIRC it’s an old policy, from when they switched over to the tri-way, because it’s a much heavier detent than the old Teflon.

Damned if you do, damned if you don’t 🤦

Why is that?

There was a controversy a while back, someone tested Hinderer's HRC and found it was a little soft; Hinderer responded by threatening legal action over the honest report. It turned a lot of fans away from the brand.

I see. That was before I fell in love with them.
there’s definitely some stories out there. But they are great knives and one of my top EDC… solid, BIG workhorses and after practice and thumb blisters I’ve figured out the detent, involving the perfect angle of attack, the right amount of grip/finesse around the lock-bar, and understanding the fulcrum of the blade and pivot. I’ve EDC Hinderer to work and flick open with just my thumb with ease only to have a few knife buddies try with all their might to open with just their thumb and be incapable of opening and left with a pencil eraser sized blister. So it just takes some practice.
I prefer my knives to open with thumb-stud, and from a tactical application, more efficient to standardize the movements… flippers are not a natural feeling and have to reposition firm grip to open vs just moving the thumb, so non flippers preferred, and finally picked up an XM-24 NON flipper!
I need a Jurrasic, they look nice but have no clue how they feel/open but bet you are somehow pressing on the lockbar when opening. I like that knife. If you want a softer detent will hav to find an older Hinderer pre-triway

I like the you strip a screw you own it policy. Put your big boy pants on.

I live close to the ranch and called to see if I needed to drop a knife off for service could I do it rather than ship it. After all these are hard to get and almost impossible to replace quickly, if lost due to shipping. The answer was "NO". Gotta love their CS.

I must admit I haven’t had to deal with their knife warranty service or any company for that matter that many times so most places throw out lifetime warranty and you just assume it’s all covered and not some small print like my car/home appliance weaseling out of doing service. Mailed A few in with Chris Reeve BUT other than loosing a cabochon, was sending in for other services anyways and they were amazing.
Mailed in a Kershaw for a cracked blade but they are thin
A few times with Benchmade before realizing they couldn’t fix overpriced, cheap, made in china designs that rattled in your pocket (no clue how the 940 is still so popular)
Customer service is a big part of my background, and takes constant training of staff and a company credo/mindset that puts the customer first utilizing empathy and positive intent with all levels of service and communication.
What blows me away is really what’s going to happen to a knife? Other than the rare blade crack, detents, lock-ups, pivots and loose screws/parts really are the main areas of wear and if those aren’t covered might was well just say as is

Just use it a bit, in my experience it will break in.

Not an "honest report". It was a big online drama, and the knife was reground. Hinderer's HRC is Peters' HRC. Hinderer told the guy to stop. The End.

lol, your story definitely not as interesting, and a lacking TDLR but I didn’t partake in any of it. I love reading about this stuff but one must take everything on the internet with a grain of salt. So many strong believers in their brands like religions and there’s always that group of extremists stirring the pot…

I got an XM-18 3.5 slicer for my first Hinderer a few months back and it took me three days to learn how to open it with the thumb studs. Once I got "it", thumb and reverse "flicks" became second nature and the action is awesome. I've since gotten another XM 3.5 with a skinner blade and an Eklipes 3.5. I'd say the detents are strong and very comparable in all three knives. I'm probably giving them too much credit, but I tend to think that knives at the Hinderer level are designed the way they are, including detent strength, for a reason. That would make me reluctant to mess with the detent on a Hinderer. BTW, your Jurassic looks awesome!
