I just recently purchased a hinderer wharncliffe and have seen some awesome pics of other members
On here with dlc black matte blades and handles for this particular knife. So I'm curious where could I
Get this service done on my blade and a cost range. Is this something rick hinderer has put out every
Now and then or did people get the dlc done on their own to customize their knife? Any input is greatly
Appreciated. Thanks

I don't think you will find many people that will do a DLC coating, but you will find a few that will do a cerakote or gunkote. Not exactly a durable finish. You also run the risk of voiding the warranty on the knife if you modify it, that may or may not be a relevant issue to keep in mond.

Speaking of blade coatings , is DLC the toughest coating available ? Or is Cerakote more durable ? Or is there another that is even better ?

Diamond Like Carbon is one of the hardest and most robust blade coatings that exists, and has a very high hardness. CeraKote can be done with a high hardness as well, but it is rare to see it on knives. The coating that Benchmade has used on their M4 offerings lately has been reported by users to scratch off with initial moderate to heavy use. The DLC used by some companies won't wear off with initial use, rather the material being cut usually remains on the blade and gives the appearance of scratches, but can be cleaned off. As far as the surface, there is always be some smoothing and wear with use, it goes with the territory.

All black coated Emerson knives are CeraKote. I've used one of my coated Emerson to cut through soda cans and the coating held up really well. Only one small scratch and some smoothing is all that happened to it. I've done the same with DLC coated blades, mostly the Spyderco Military. The coating didn't necessarily wear but the aluminum left silver colored markings on the blade.

There are several businesses who do Ion Bond DLC coating on firearms, and firearms parts. Many will do knives due to the simplicity of the process (on a knife that is). Just do a search for dlc ion bond finishing services.

Congratulations on your purchase, the wharncliffe has become my favorite EDC blade. I can't get over how useful and practical it is. My wife even got a 3" wharncliffe and couldn't be happier. If you want a hinderer DLC open up the wallet and bend over, it's going to hurt. Also to find one for sell is like finding a unicorn. If you gett it aftermarket coated it kills the value of your knife. A few weeks ago someone had a Hinderer wharncliffe with aftermarket DLC coating for sale so it can be done.

Here's a picture to help your motivation

Thanks for the input! I'm definitely nervous to take a risk of having someone dlc it and then something going wrong
With the detent amongst other things. But I agree that finding a wharncliffe is like spotting a unicorn and then trying to
Catch it before someone else does. So I'm not going to take the risk of ruining my brand new knife, I'd like to keep it as
Badass as it is! I'm thinking my best bet would be the custom knife show in new york in November to try and find nice dlc.
Thanks again for the input!

They'll pop up from time to time on the exchange. So just keep a vigilant eye on it.
