Hello Hinderer herd. I recently started collecting Hinderers and man they are all they are cracked up to be. I got lucky on my first knife and scored a knife that I thought was not going to be possible to find anymore. I was able to locate a Hinderer xm-18 3.5 non-flipper with a Tom Krein regrind. The regrind is masterful. It is without a doubt the sharpest and most beautiful grind I have ever seen. Now as most of you probably know, Tom decided about 3 months ago that he is no longer going to be accepting any regrind work and may never again. I spoke with him and that is exactly what he told me. I also noticed that Tom's regrinds on the Hinderers are almost the exact same as Rick's custom Spearpoint grind. So you get the best of both worlds without having to shell out the extra $1,200.00 and you do not have to worry about scratches as much as Rick no longer refurbs custom blades which are satin or polished. Also, I heard that recently Rick and Tom got into a heated arguement because Tom let a number of his Hinderer regrinds out of the shop without his Krein logo stamped on the blade and people were trying to sell them as custom Spearpoint Hinderers. I do not know if this may have something to do with why Tom has decided to no longer take on regrind work but this is all hearsay but does make a lot of sense. Tom also told me that he is going to be focusing on his own line of knives and that is also why he is no longer going to be doing and custom regrind work. So my question to all of you is how many Hinderer Krein regrinds are out there and what type of value would say my 3.5 non-flipper now has? It started life as a Sparto grind and has 20V steel, if I recall its 20V. As I mentioned I am a quite new to Hinderer knifes and Im trying to figure out what I have on my hands here. I will post some pics tomorrow as it is too late tonight but the grind is just amazing. And in a nutshell it is almost identical to Rick Spearpoint custom grinds. Any input would be much appreciated and as mentioned I will get some pics up asap. Nice to meet all of you and so far I have been very impressed with Rick and Tom's work.

Why would you get on a public forum and repeat "hearsay"? Do you know either Rick or Tom? Did either one of them tell you this? Your knife is worth what you paid for it. Tom is the only one who would know how many XM-18s he reground, perhaps you should ask him.

By the way, it's Spanto not Sparto. It's a combination of a tanto grind and a spearpoint grind.

Not a fan of any alteration of a Hinderer unless done the man himself. Also this is a site that Hinderer Knives puts up for us to enjoy and talk about Hinderers, to promote someone else in this sub forum seems tacky to me. Also commenting on other people's conversations and claiming what they said was hearsay but it makes sense to you?

To me you have ruined any collectability of that knife, altering a knife made one of the top knife makers in the world decreases the value!

Unfortunately, In my opinion the knife is worth less than an unmodified XM to someone familiar with RHK. Part of the value of Rick's knives is the backing of the company and the lifetime guarantee on the knife. Now that it's been modded its no longer part of RHK. It's kind of a bastard now...

Tom Krein makes some very nice knives. That being said, regrinds by him and others void the warranty of the knife and typically reduce the value compared to a similar production knife which has not been modified.

I believe much of your hearsay is inaccurate.

Not going to waste a lot of time on this. Glad you realize and appreciate what Rick creates - to bad you couldn't have left your comments at that.
Personally I find this thread offensive.
READ the sticky above, edit your post or leave as is.... matters not.
As for posting pics of an "altered" XM - Don't, they will be deleted and the thread locked.
Enjoy your knife.

In evolution, mutations are seldom beneficial. The same might be said for regrinds. But nonetheless you should enjoy your knife.

Sorry, didn't mean to offend anyone. Was just curious what people had to say about the Krein regrinds, that all.
