Mr. Hinderer,

I recently ordered a Zero Tolerance/Hinderer collaboration knife which appears to be quite similar to your XM-18.

How much performance am I giving up due to the ELMAX steel used in the blade, and the mass production techniques used in manufacture, compared to a genuine Hinderer?

I would have much preferred to order an XM24 from one of your dealers, however I have learned, through 45 years of marriage that one must sometimes forego
that which one truly desires in ordr to maintain "domestic tranquility." :p

Thank you,

Ben

If you are asking about performance, ELMAX should have a better retention than the CTS-XHP and S35VN that is on the XM24 and the 0560/0561 should be smoother than the XM24, due to KVT. If you are asking about F&F, a $1200 custom Hinderer is expected to be better than the ZT model, but I suspect the new 0560/0561 will be no slouch in the F&F department.

God Bless Ya Brrother.... I know (many of us know) of what you speak. I think you know the answer to your question, There is more to knives (the love of knives) than How good will it cut. Your going to be fine (better than fine) with your new knife. Fact is, it is a very good knife. Someone like Rick would not allow his name to be associated with a product that wasn't good.
Doesn't change the fact that you know (and it isn't) a Real Hinderer.
Personally, I would save up, forego interim steps and have one thing "special" than 2 or 3 things that will be functional but, not special.
Just my $.02 and worth at least half as much.

you can have an incredible Nissan GT R and pay 90K or buy a Ferrari 458 and pay 260K.... If 0-60 mph is the only thing in your mind; the GT R is more that enough.... if pride, uniqueness, etc is more that just numbers; then a Hindered is the way to go
GT R is HECK of a car, and so the ZT. You wont notice a "performance" difference. (In fact, the GT R eat Ferraris fro breakfast ;-) )

I've got 2 Hinderers and one ZT. If I hadn't bought the Hinderers first I'd have liked the ZT a lot. But already having and using the Hinderers ruined me. I pulled it out of the box and messed with it for a few minutes, then put it back. When I get back to the States I'm going to sell it.

Story of my life too - 4 Sebenzas = sold, 2 Benchmades = sold, 3 Spydercos = sold, 4 Cold Steel = gifted & sold= 2 ZT = sold and probably more I've forgotton. Whenever I think I'm going to pull the trigger on a knife I feel the XM-18 (EDC) in my pocket and think "why would I want that?"

Once you've hefted the near perfection of the XM-18 & 24 there's no going back! :D Yeah, I'm a Hinderer fanboy and darn proud of it!! :p

Now I've got lots of CRK's (about 18-20 altogether) and love them. In fact they get more pocket time lately than the Hinderers. But after having the real McCoy, the ZT feels like an imitation Hinderer.

No disrespect of course use 'em in good health. I didn't carry my Sebenzas and why tie up money in a folder you don't carry? I'm saving for more Hinderer's - well an XM-24 and God willing one of the new XM-18 4th gen slicers next year. :D

I don't own any CRK's but can see how someone could own and admire Both Hinderers and CRK's. Both very fine knives impeccable F&F exuding quality AND very dissimilar knives, so much so - they don't conflict in a collection.
The ZT (I'm sure a very good knife in a way, not an original)
Sort of like my Acies is to a Sebenza.

I don't blame you there, I want a 24 myself. Like rubiconss said, a CRK is a different animal. I wouldn't mind having as many Hinderers as I do CRK's. :p :D

I agree. After reading rubiconss's post, it came to me that they're both extremely well thought out and well made folders. Both have impeccable F&F. His remark "they don't conflict in a collection" is spot on. The CRK is a lighter duty knife, the XM-18 and 24 are extremely hard use, even though owners baby them in many cases because of their cost and scarcity.

Kinda like I baby mine. BTW, that's soup on the blade which is still in great shape! What a fine folder!! :D

That is impressive indeed, well played Sir:thumbup:
What I find impressive is two fold, The knife for performing and it's owner for deploying the prized tool to perform a task it was clearly designed and built for.

Coincidental because I was just thinking today how enjoyable to hear real life true stories from those who actually "Use" their Hinderers.
Ashame that many of these amazing creations enjoy their lives sitting in the safety of a climate controlled 2,000lb. Safe.

I haven't taken any pics of my knives in use, but since I'm in the sandbox you can safely bet that mine get plenty of use. No safe queens here! They do have it fairly easy though, I'm a REMF in a non-combat job.

Hey Lone_Wolfe, if you can get some action shots - they light up my life! :D I agree with rubiconss about safe queens. I have a couple I only carry to show off - maybe to use at a family function but that's it. The rest are users.

You wouldn't happen to be in the UK?:D

Thank you, and I'm trying.

I'll do that as soon as I can, of CRK's and Hinderers. I do have a really nice damascus CRK over here, but I even use that too. Light duty only, that's my only concession.

No, sorry. Strider has it right, I'm in the sandbox.

I believe she's in Afghanistan.

Yep, and that's the reason I won't list any of the knives I want to sell yet. I don't mind waiting weeks for something I bought to get here, and I don't get antsy with my sellers. But I don't want buyers wondering where their knives are when they take a few weeks to get to them.
