Hip flask

Maybe here to start:

I have a couple but rarely use them. I got a nice one for free once. I'd ordered some pistol magazines and rifle parts from an internet store based in Texas. I needed them for my next range visit. Included was a nice hip flask as well (no charge) to go along with the rest of the order. I had to smile. Only from Texas.

I was given some good advice once about good flasks. Get on that's rounded so that if you drop it it won't split at the hard angle, and get one with an attached cap so that you don't lose it.

Those two features are very hard to find together, and if you do please let me know.

Be careful about actually using any of those old pewter or silver plated flasks. A lot of small time makers used lead solder in the seams, so I personally wouldn't use any of these old flasks unless they are glass with solid silver caps.

If it's sheffield pewter, with sheffield proofs, it's safe to use. Don't be scared away from pewter.

I just (couple hours ago) bought myself a Snow Peak Titanium Flask off eBay, which may seem odd as I don't drink alcohol!

I bought it to carry water for when I take meds' for my spine injury, and as I've always liked this model which holds 5.6 fl oz.

Titanium!? I may have to try one of those for myself. No scotch, though. Only pewter for the single malt.

Thats interesting, coz I have a few old hip flasks that I know were made by James Dixon, and research shows he (they?) were an outfit that made silver and pewter flasks in Birmingham. Is that the same as "Sheffield" pewter?

Some of the flasks are really nice, with crocodile leather wrapping and little cups that fit on the lower halves of the flasks.

That titanium one is very nice, but a bit expensive for a flask.

Got mine used, worked out at $75, making it the smallest, most expensive canteen that I'm ever likely to own, though it really is a beautifully crafted piece that's a pleasure to handle and own.

I love it.

oh yeah! the snow peak flask is very expensive, but it is also very very nice--light and capacious and comfortable to carry.

it's one of those things that i've desired for so long that its was no longer worth denying the itch...so i scratched. i bought one and am very happy  :)

Even if I didn't need a small water bottle for my meds', I'd have still bought this.

Is there something special to this statement, or is it just personal preference?

I don't personally care much for stainless or aluminum, but wonder if there are good reasons for pewter as far as taste?

hell I got a cheap flask at target for $10 and it's like 6oz or so, works great for going to the movies with a few shots of blantons on me. It has an attached cap and whatnot...good enough for now. But those snow peaks ones look so neato O_O
