I have seen lots of posts about elephant ivory but what about hippo tusk ivory? I have an R.W. Wilson skinner with a hippo tusk handle that I am thinking about selling

I think the clamp down is on any Ivory since it can be hard to prove it's not elephant.

I'm not sure where you live but I wouldn't want to try exporting it anywhere.

I would not send it across any International borders but Hippo looks completely different to Elephant Ivory.

I think poachers are renaming elephant ivory as mastodon or mammoth to get through the back. That's why there's a drive to ban all types, walrus, and the ancient stuff to completely close the door. The looks don't matter and I don't know if they can perform a reliable non-destructive test to identify what's really what.

My point was that if the OP wants to sell his knife and it has Hippo on it, any semi-knowledgable collector/dealer could easily identify hippo over Ivory. They look completely different.
Unlike Mastodon and Ivory you don't need a test to tell the difference.

I called Mr. Wilson when I got the knife he was extremely gracious and a great guy to talk to. I sent him some pictures and he identified it as a knife he made using a hippo tooth that was part of several hippo teeth he bought from a guy at a knife show around 2010.
