Hipsters and axes

I enjoyed reading this:

http://www.nexthipstertrend.com/2013/06/page/2/

I like PBR, but I've been drinking it for 20 years.

Like wow, outtasight, groovy right on. For once, I can be cool and hip instead of being a worn out, washed up misfit schoolteacher who had trouble getting a date when I was an undergraduate at University of California, Berkeley. Of course, back then I didn't know enough to carry my axe on my back as I walked down Telegraph Avenue. I could only wait for an opportunity to say something stupid like "This past summer, when I was in SE Alaska, I had to use an axe when we made trail for the road survey crew.....". By then, the hot chicks were already bored to death and ready to move on. I should have carried my axe to Latimer Hall (Chemistry) or the Life Science Building (Biology).

I need to be ahead of the curve. The next time I visit, I will walk around with a 14 inch Tramontina machete on my belt as a conversation starter "Yes, I always carry my Third World/Peace Corps/indigenous peoples bush knife with me. I may need it to plant taro in Peoples Park." This time, I will be ready.:D

Lot of hipster stuff going on with axes now. Many sites selling their own axes for big bucks which are just flea market finds restored, but somehow priced $100, &125, $150....etc. I don't get it at all.

I like the fact the popularity if the axe is regaining strength - but we don't need to glamorize it. Sharpen it up, use it, sweat some, finish up, and put it away. To try and make it cool means you are trying too hard in the first place.

Hipsters. Ugh.

Sounds like some on here could make bank selling project axes to hipsters. One of you should look into it. :D

This article is obviously a joke but I personally don't like to see the popularity of axes go up and I'll tell you why. Most of the people that are the target for bushcrafting and such have NO USE for an axe. They live in the city and will go out to popular trails and pretend to be something they're not. Killing trees in the process. Just a few weeks ago we were at a county camp site with a large group having fun around the campfire and all of a sudden we hear... whack...whack...whack... Well those kids didn't realize there were responsible people in the adjacent campsite and they ESPECIALLY didn't expect for one of those people to pull a face melter out of their pocket and light them up like a christmas tree. Yeah they were chopping in the dark.

LOL...sometimes being older is fun. Told them to stop and they did but not before hacking away for a bit. A "Those damn kids!" almost came out of my mouth. Not that old yet though. :D

That's a real problem in these parts.

I don't see this article as a joke. I haven't seen one with an axe, but I've seen lots with decent sized fixed blades wandering around. They're out there.

It's a symptom of in-betweenish-ness, not yet an adult man but not a teen male either. A lot of young people learn to become mature, responsible, capable men and women by family role modeling, sports, working or military service but many miss out on the lessons for whatever reason so they try to gain it by using symbols. If I think that way then me collecting the symbols of what I think an ideal adult male should look like gets me closer (not really) to being the real deal. It is surface stuff, all show. The hipster clothes, kilts, man-scaping, dredlocks, shaved head, facial hair/no facial hair, tattoos, piercings, tight or loose pants, stupid hats, Dickies/Carhart clothes and work boots that neither one ever get dirty.....what a sorry way to live. Anyhow, it is a symptom of no one having expected much from them while they should have been growing up and them realizing much later that their man potential is seriously lagging. Don't be shy about letting these boys know that being a real man is not about costumes or accessories but is inside your head being who and what you say you are all the time, dependable, hard working, honest, can commit long term, sense of humor, ready to destroy if needed but more prone to nurture, productive, ready to make decisions.....in other words, no longer childish or Peter Pan in a grown body.

The hipster hating needs to stop.
Soon they're gonna start throwing parades
and demanding to get married.

Yes they have beards, so what?
Middle eastern people have beards,
and no one in the United States hates a middle easterner.

Lets look at all the good things hipsters have done.
They have made tattoos harmless.
People with sleeve tattoos used to make me nervous.
Now they make me hazelnut mochas.

Don't forget that they also have perfected the art of keeping up with their social media connections while looking like they are working. An added bonus is how they can be face to face with someone and make their handheld electronics more important than the person they are actually speaking to.

Operator 1975 no matter how cute you try and make it - and you've got a talent for that - it's a thin disguise for your outright bigoted skew on the world that you can better keep a can on if not seek help for. It's not so much a recommendation as point for the rest jumping on this bandwagon.
