Hissatsu: CRKT vs Ancient Edge ???

James Williams is the designer of the Hissatsu. James Williams is the head and founder of Bugei Inc. Ancient Edge is a sword/bladed thing sales shop that is attached to Bugei. So the hissatsus you see on the CRKT website and the ancient edge site are the same thing.

Thanks a lot,

i knew about the "original" Version and still wish i had the money to buy one years ago,

now i just wanted to know if there is ANY difference between the knives/sheats or if i can order just by price :)

I'm told many of the originals were poorly made, but were at least ATS-34.

Current model has 1" shorter blade, 1" longer handle, and CRKT's typical bad sheath and poorly heat treated AUS6 blade that won't hold an edge.

I agree on the first three, but the jury's still out on the heat-treat. I and several folks in my dojo have orders in, and it will be interesting to see how these turn out (expected availability is mid-to-late February).

AUS 6 would definitely not be my personal steel choice, but I do have a couple of CRKT knives with that steel and haven't seen anything I'd consider problematic about either edge-holding or resharpening.

Out of curiousity why worry about the AUS-6? This isn't exactly a hard use utility blade. For the intended application I'd think top flight edge holding wouldn't be the first priority.

I used to carry a standard model KFF, in AUS6. The damned thing would not hold an edge to save its life, even with daily touch-ups, even when not used.

I suppose I should be grateful for this--one day I went to pull my keys out of my pocket & found I couldn't get my hand out of my pocket. After much struggling, I let go of the keys and pulled my hand out. The KFF had for no apparent reason opened partway and its tip was in my middle finger. Thankfully since it wouldn't hold an edge the wound wasn't too severe, despite the whole of its weight being held by its tip in one finger.

Subsequently I went to an AUS8 M16 model, which also wouldn't hold an edge, and AUS8 normally is fairly decent in that regard, given reasonable care. Since then I've sold all my CRKT knives, and I won't buy another again.

CRKT doesn't heat treat too well, I guess. My KFF has the best egde I could give to any of my knives
