Hello George, what is your opinion of the Chainpuri compared to the Chiruwa Ang Khola... based on handling? I was on the fence between those two.

The CAK is a real workhorse of a knife. I wouldn’t chop as much with the Chainpuri as I would a CAK.

I am actually looking for a blade to do some heavy chopping with, which is why I was leaning toward the CAK. I agree with you that the Chainpuri is gorgeous though, which is why I was considering it. I have a cabin out in the woods and need to do some clearing out. I do own an Ang Khola already that is 17.5" and 30 oz. These Kukri's are so darn beautiful that I was going to buy this one and pick one to be my workhorse and one to be my show piece. Can you tell me what the difference is between the Chiruwa Ang Khola and Ang Khola? Is it just that the CAK is pinned through the handle, so a little more durable.

Chainpuri is definitely a beautiful show piece. The CAK is full tang and Ang Khola is a rat tail tang. The CAK is the only knife guaranteed as a pry bar. Definitely strong enough for the cabin in the woods! You did good!
Purna Chainpuris might get more scarce.

Thank you for the info and advice George. I will stay with the CAK, in hopes that someone else didn't beat me to it and use that as my worker, as it sounds like it will be super durable! Thanks again!

Just curious, if the fullering is done after the blade is (mostly) shaped it doesn't actually make it any lighter, correct? I guess it would be the same weight but slightly longer or deeper?

Something to consider if you stuck on the choppers. While the CAK has full tang and considered the strongest there is a trade off. A full tang knife will transfer more shock to your bones and can be a bit harder on your joints if you do a lot of continuous chopping. The wood between your hands all around the tang really makes a difference on them long chopping sessions. Also if your knife is frozen expect to feel cold metal on your hands. Its really a toss up but usually when I process wood I do a lot of it at once so I prefer a regular AK. I can say this from experience because I have each and have used both extensively. Just something to consider.

The edge geometry of a Gelbu Special is similar to that of an AK or CAK, so it's a pretty good chopper for its weight, even if Ram Kumar forgot the fullers (which is reflected in Yangdu's asking price).

The way I interpret Yangdu's posting is that this knife does not have the deep fullers that are characteristic of the GS model. It's probably more like a Sirupati in that respect. HI blades usually have at least shallow fullers that result from the hammering. Might not show up in a photo or even by eyeballing, but if you run a straightedge along the side at right angles, you'll see the concavity. Not always there, but usually.

The fullers on western knives are usually ground in after the blade is forged. The fullers on HI knives are forged into the steel, which makes the blade stronger. Steel has a grain structure, and forging the fullers preserves the grain by compression, while grinding the fullers cuts across the grain. The same principle applies to wood, especially long pieces. Planing with the grain produces a stronger piece than removing wood across the grain.
 
Thanks George! I didnt say anything because all you guys were spot on and I didnt need to but the shock effect does matter to some heavy users so i thought id add that. Im not such a heavy user anymore because i have electricity now and getting old ya know but it does matter:D
I didnt notice the missing fuller but at 21oz I think it will perform just like the other Gelbus. If you like Sirupati but want one a little more oriented on the chopper side then this is a super rare chance to get an otherwise one off custom:thumbsup:
