Just a short note to relate a program for tonights viewing. There is a show on "survival tools" tonight at either 9 or 10 PM. I just got a glipse at the ad but thought you might want to know.

According to the guide, 10:00 EST. Shows the name as Survival Technology.

Thanks for the tip.

Shucks, I totally missed that one! I'll have to look it up in reruns.
I'd love to hear a symopsis from anyone watch the show.

The show was interesting, but a fairly cursory overview. One thing that intrigued me was the suggestion that ice climbers train their capillaries to dilate by soaking their hands in slushy icewater. Any truth to that?

Also, in the desert segment they suggested that if you couldn't find shelter from the sun you should dig a hole and get in it because the temperature can be ten or more degrees cooler only "a few feet down". I don't know about you, but when I dug a conical hole 3 feet deep to try a desert water condenser, it was a heck of a lot of hot, sweating work (and I had an excellent shovel). To dig a hole big enough to get in at that depth, you would be generating a lot of body heat and water loss. Any opinions on whether it would be worth it?

Maybe digging at night at a relaxed and slow pace, and then sleep in your shelter during the day.

During the day I suppose you could stretch your shirt or jacket between two cacti and create alittle shade to wait until the sun goes down so you could start digging.

And don't dig around gopher or rat holes-- you might dig up a snake!

No matter what it would be an extremely dangerous situation without water.

Good luck,
Allen.
