The RARE 890/650 build out and the Pig Sticker 651
Rareknives.jpg

I was looking at the latest Sunday Picture Show. I love looking at all the really nice knives. I do have a question about the 890 / 650, which was included in that thread. When did they start making those and why? To me it looks like a clone to the Buck / Strider knife. I have one and I guess it started out as a 650 NightHawk and kind of got meaner and bigger. I am just curious were this design came from and why? Maybe a poor man's Buck / Strider? Well, not a poor man, maybe a not so rich man.:) (I am talking about the knvies on the left of the picture.)

Peter, Thanks, I enjoy the pictures as well . The knife you reference was a special order for a man from Australia in early 2008 . I think he ordered 200 but some way only 100 was paid for and the remainder was sold by Buck . Those still come up on the bay just watch there and you may obtain one . I remember those had a 8" blade of 420HC . DM

Dave,

Please read the OP. This guy is asking about the knives on the left in the photo, the 650/890's not the ones on the right 651 pig sticker.

Hi Peter,

Dave did a good job on the 651 and shared some info I did not know about them. Place an order and not pay????? The nerve of some folks.

The 650/890 build out knives were offered by buck after the Strider collaboration with buck ended. They were trying to us up the remaining stock parts and shaped the 650 blade on the 890 shaped handle. This is a very limited run and not many were made. I had a few of them. The perfect fighting knife IMHO, the balance in hand was perfect. But, that's just my opinion;) SO, the long and short of it is, the 650/890 was a cool way to use up spare parts.

Thanks that is exactly what I wanted to know. I don't remember seeing it in the any of the Catalogs, yet Buck had them for sale in the annual BCCI meeting in Atlanta last year and I picked one up. I guess it is one of interseting knives that make knife collecting so neat.

Now, if I can pick up one of those 651 Pig Stickers that was ordered by the guy in Australia......

Thats correct, we made about 450 of the 890/650build outs and it was to use up parts. IMHO, its a pretty cool knife for an "accident". They chose the blade shape because we had sheaths for that blade.
This just in...it turns out we sold about 1700 of the Pig Sticker/Intruder knives. From what I can tell, a vast majority of them were shipped out of the US but they can still be found around is you look for them.

I have one of each and like them a lot. LOT of knife for the money if you can buy them right. Plus a neat bit o'history.

I was thrilled to get the 890/650! Really like the design but won't own anything with strider's name on it.

Here is a detail that I used on an auction for the RARE 890/650 about 1 year ago.HOPE THIS Helps.

Buck Knives has created a once in a lifetime Strider 890 and Nighthawk 650 Hybrid mix. Hunting, Tactical and Military use! We can confirm one of these knives is in Iraq and one of these knives is in Afgahnistan as WE sent them over there for a family member and a good friend. They among the many others fighting for us are all in our Prayers!!
This very limited "Fantasy Build" run of 450 total made .
The "NightRider" named by us !!!!! (Sounds better than a Striderhawk!)

Buck Knives only released these here, in Post Falls, ID... So it does pay to live up here in the Pacific Northwest!
We were able to buy this great limited "BUILD OUT" Fantasy creation knife during the 2008 BUCK KNIVES Factory Clearance Sale on April 19th 2008 located here in Post Falls, ID.

Description:
This is a brand new Strider 890 and Nighthawk 650 hybrid created for any Hunting, Military and Tactical knife use you may have need for. This knife was a Factory Fantasy Creation Limited Edition. The story from CJ Buck himself was that BUCK KNIVES had 450 Strider G10 handle-pairs left over as they discontinued the Strider knife line. The G-10 handle-pairs were rather expensive and Buck doesnt waste anything. Someone thought, "Hey let's use these up and surprise everyone at the Factory Clearance Sale with something no one has ever seen!. So Buck Knives modified a current combat Tactical 650 knife blade around the G-10 scales in a Fantasy Hybrid never to be repeated knife!

I have 5 of these for myself that I was privileged to be able to have signed ( so in our humble XDguys opinion, this knife will be a valuable collectors item very soon. Again BUCK KNIVES only built 450 of these rare knives. They are stamped, "Buck", and, "U.S.A. only". No model numbers or anything else on the blade.THIS in itself is an unlikely occurrence for Buck Knives!!! I do not think there are ANY left as MANY members of the Buck Collectors Club made great efforts to gain possession of at least one to hold on too for there collections and displays of unlike and custom Buck knives!

Overall, 12 inches or 31 cm long. A very well balanced knife with a good, solid feel in your hand,1/25 inch thick full tang. This is a capable Hunting, Tactical, and Military knife. The blade is a Highly Modified NIGHTHAWK 650 based blade, it is 6 inches of 420HC steel with a non-reflective bead blast finish and of course the famous Buck Knives edge. The 650 Nighthawk Knife was tested for destruction and was spoken highly of as one Extreme knife for the money! Now with the STRIDER G10 scale handles for non-slip, we dont think you can beat it! This one time Hybrid Knife at the handle is about 5 1/25 long and a little over 1/2 inch thick it just fills your hand and you know it will take care of business. This knife comes with a Buck-marked nylon sheath(A Pigsticker sheath again Buck doesnt waste stuff)) that has a leg tie-down and will ship in the factory box. The box has the model number 890/650-BO, with a production date of 4/08/08 to 4/10/08 and CAT. # 8591 . This rare knife is covered by the Buck Knives lifetime warranty.
A Few of these we sent over to the sandbox to friends and family THEY LOVE em! . May God protect our Troops

Wow, I got a ton of information about this knife. Now I know where the knife came from and why. I agree with you that it is a "pretty cool knife".

I also want to thank you for bringing these knives to the 2009 BCCI annual meeting here in Atlanta. After I picked up one of these knives, I couldn't figure out where the heck it came from and I thought maybe everyone knew about these knives, except me.

Hi guys, I have a Buck 890/650-BO cat #8591 and a date of 04/10/2008 on the box end. It has a nylon sheath. Is this a "rare" knife that you are talking about? I bought this with some other knives and I am not familiar with this model. Whats the value. Thanks for your help.

I have 2 of them. One my buddy bought at the factory sale in 2008 and gave to me as a welcome home from Iraq gift when I got back in 2009. The other one I think I bought from jb4570 when he was selling some of his collection. I like the model and think Buck should have made this a regular production model. It does move well in the hand, is quick, and manipulates well. I like the full tang and G10 grips but would have made the grip a little smaller. I also have 2 888 Solutions and a 890 and really liked the Buck/Strider collaboration knives. I also have a Strider VB, EBL-T, EBL-S, and EBT. Of them all I like the actual Strider VB the best and then the 888. Now I have to find a Pig Sticker.

Yes the Buck 890/650-BO hybrids are rare. As mentioned above in the forum; only about 450 were made. They are hard to find and Buck enthusiasts seem willing to pay when available. I recently (within the past two weeks) saw one on ebay sell for $130+. It doesnt mean yours would sell at exactly the same price (if you planned to sell) but its a pretty close estimate. Hope this helps answer your question.
