Hi gang,
I know that the origin of the Bali is somewhat cloudy but when did they become popular in the US?
Any info on the subject would be appreciated!
Thanks,

I would say that Mr. Imada himself was the trend setter! At least he was for allot of people that I know!

I am sure that opinions do vary!

- Popular, I don't know as I'm not American, I guess that Imada's books in the 80s have had a great influence on the popularity of balisong.

- Imported, I've heard that in 1908, a US Patent would have been deposed in Connecticut by Mr Charles E. Billing (source : Fred Perrin). If there's someone here from the Connecticut, he could give a call to the Patent Services to check

Thanks for the info guys.

A freind suggested that Bruce Lee had alot to do with the Bali's popularity. The theory was that after Lee's "invasion" into the US, the Bali became popular with the MA crowd, then with users/collectors. Any thoughts?

I was under the impression that bali's first sparked major interest in US society near the end of WW2. When the troops coming back from the south east brought back bali's with them. I know that wasn't the introduction of bali's in the US, but that's how they became popular...I think. There are others who know way more about it than I could begin to tell you.

Bruce has had an impact on the whole Martial Arts fame (which decupled after BL's movies). If there's a weapon that he made famous, it is definitely the nunchaku.
After the movies of BL with the nunchaku in the 70s, the MA movies of the 80s (a lot of Cannon movies) popularized other weapons like shuriken and balisong. It was "Ninja" movies (after the Kung Fu fashion).

I've never seen Lee with a balisong (and I have seen a lot of pix of him).
That's also true that Inosanto has become famous for his teaching of JKD (Bruce's art) and for being Bruce Lee's disciple. And Dan Inosanto taught FMA to Jeff Imada. So indirectly, yes, Bruce has had an impact on balisong popularity
