I saw this axe at an antiques store in town today, but didn't buy because of two things.. There appeared to be grind lines in the bit from a grinding wheel, and it was priced at $35. That being said, I have never heard of this maker before, and can't find much info on them online. Does anybody know anything about them? Is it worth the risk of a ruined temper? Thanks all.

Grey Gorge axes are from the Hartwell Company of Memphis. The following source says that Hartwell was primarily a handle maker, and Hartwell's axe heads (and hammer heads) were sourced from Warren Axe & Tool.

[Off topic, the link also gives an interesting history of the Cedar Pattern axe, and its Texas origins.]

from a previous thread, found by searching for Hartwell

Buy it. I'll give you $40 for it. :D

Seriously.

Hey which antique store is that in?
I would be happy to drop by to check it out, make sure its worth the $35 and report back to you for you.

Hey! That is intersting to find that Hartwell got their heads from Warren. Big fan of Warren and have had a couple of Hartwell's pass through my hands without knowing the connection. Thanks for that Steve.

Another great pice of detective work, Steve. You da MAN!

The cedar axe history is priceless. I always assumed the cedar axe was a west coast invention. I never suspected Texas.

You should pick it up. Those are pretty rare from what I have been able to tell. 35 is not that bad for a well made double bit axe. That link to the Grey Gorge history is pretty interesting. Good research from Mr. S. Tall.
