Okay fellas i hit the lottery!!!!!!! fella that i know from work told me a few weeks ago that he heard i was makeing knives. Anyway we got to talking and he told me his father used to make knives but he passed away in about 90 or 91 anyway he asked if i wanted what was left of his supplies he said there was some micarta and some exotic hardwoods in a couple of boxes. he delivere the stuff today there was 10 sticks of stage about 40 sets of cocobolo scales a block of black canvas micarta three inches thick by about 12/X12 and probobaly 30 other sets of scales from linen micarta to ironwood and so one. probably 50 knife patterns 20 unfinnished blades a dozen 2X72 belts and to top it all off a burr king grinder and a unused paragon heat treat oven. I asked him if he was aware of the value of the equipment and he told me he talked it over with his sister and his mother and they would prefer to give it to me since i seemed to have the same desire for knives that his father did. My question is for forged carbon steel blades is ther a resource available for heat treat temps for 1084 5160 and O1 steel? I remember seeing one quite a while ago but where?

you can also go to crucible's website they have all the info for you could want for steel. even if you aren't using thier steel i would think the specs would be close enough for 1084 5160 and 0-1.

Well that's what clean living will get you! Congratulations. Sounds like the knifemaker generousity is genetic and was passed along to your coworker and family. Fantastic. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes out of your good fortune!

UNREAL!!! I hope you make excellent use of the equipment to help extend the craft.... thanks to this man's very generous family! Totally awesome!!!

Only downer... the belts are probably junk. They have a shelf-life... and those are pretty old. Everything else though... would be flat out fantastic!

I'd say thanks for sharing, but now I'm jealous ;)

I thought I did well getting a bunch of stuff at an auction for cheap, cheap cant compare with free. And I didnt get a burr king. Congrats, I would take IG's suggestion and make a knife in memory of their dad.

Holy Jezzum Crow! Do you know how many times that fantasy has passed through my mind at work in the last year? Getting a boatload of things no longer avalible and geared to knifemaking just because I was always talking about knives and knifemaking. To hear it happened to someone in real life blows me away.

thanks fellas it was kinda unexpected it seems that i have had to struggle for everything i have gotten up to this point as far as equipment and supplies ( read that as wife is extremely tight with purse strings) and then this happens. as far as a knife what i am doing is takeing three of the ones he had started and i am going to finnish them as kind of a collabaration deal and etch them with their father/husbands name and then my name. I thought that might have more meaning for them than me makeing them a knife of mine.

Wow! What a lucky guy you are. That was incredibly kind of them, especially considering the value of all involved. A free Burr King...only in my dreams. And a Paragon oven??? Unbelievable. Sounds like you got enough handle material to last for years. How much does a square foot of Micarta 3" thick weigh?

Congrats.

keep the karma flowing.....

Congrats!

Something tells me you'll have trouble sleeping tonight.....lie in bed with a perma-grin. :D  :p

I like the idea of finishing one that he already started. Seems classy.

Wow that's amayzing!

Ya I think finishing one of the father's knives for the family is a really nice gift back to them.

Happy grinding.
