well, most of the splitting i do is large dia logs (over 15"), and i dont think that the AK would do such a good job on those anyway (then again i dont know, please correct me if i am wrong). also, the YCS is just such a beauty! I really like the one the Blues had, made by Durma i think someone said? I guess ill just start saving and hope another one with the nice curves comes around!

Made by Durba, my apologies for the innaccuracy...also this was meant to be a reply under my earlier thread, sorry about that!

It depends a bit on the kind of wood you are splitting. For example season oak is much easier to split that wet spruce. A maul or hydraulic splitter might be what you want instead of a khukuri when you get to 15". Even with a maul you will have to split along the rings carefully. Of course you might get well seasoned oak or spruce which can be quite fun to split with a big khukuri. I usually do. A 20" Ang Khola or Mega Salyan would be the miminum. The 38" Sirupati would even be better.

will a 38" Siruptai really split dry hardwood as well as a maul? im curious to know, since i do a lot of splitting (cherry, ash, maple, etc.) for the upcoming sugaring season and wood stove. im currently using a nice maul and am perfectly content to stick with it for splitting the big stuff, but it would be nice to have something to split smaller stuff (8" dia) that is more accurate. thanks!

I doubt that anything is going to work better than a maul. I think a GRS might work pretty good on smaller stuff, tho. Will has used one with pretty good success.

yeah i would have been very surprised if a knife split better than a maul, just because that is the mauls single purpose. also, is there any chance of a plain YCS coming out soon like the one featured in the forum made by Durba with a very nicely curved blade? i really like that style, both aesthetically and for practical purposes. put me down for whenever the next one comes along:D (that is assuming i dont run over any more large nails:mad: )

Quad my friend if you want the Very next one to come along it's necessary to notify Uncle Bill by e-mail and send a check pre-paying for the khukuri, maybe shipping to(?).
Only those with pre-paid orders get the "next one to come along" and there's no guarantee it's gonna have the same curve as the one you and I have admired; even if it is made by the same kami.
There's never any two or more that's exactly alike, close maybe....:)

I actually use my 22" Ang Khola and Mega Salyan to split with, the GRS usually just gets stuck. The AK weights 3.75 LB and Mega Salyan weights 5.65 LB. My maul has a 6 LB head if I recall correctly. The khukuri is fun to use but the maul is more efficient. The maul is much 6-7" and up. Unlike the khukuri the cut length does not increase with depth. Another advantage is the maul is shaped to split wood and is on the end of a handle.

I am not sure about the 38" Sirupati since I don't own one. At over 9 LB it has a weight advanage over my maul. The 38" length still puts the sweet spot at a distance shorter than my maul. It probably has a decent wedge shape. It might be comparable to my maul but then I am not sure I can weld a 9 LB khukuri effectively.

I think it boils down to using the right tool to do the right job. A maul doesn't have many other purposes than splitting wood. A khukuri does.

...sound right that a maul would be best for splitting....so i need to send you a check and an email, Uncle Bill? after my paychecks make up for what that nail did, i think i can handle that :D (my girlfriend will just have to be satisfied with picnics in the cold for a while).
