Logan's only 4, and not mature enough yet for a knife, but i've been thinking what would be the best first SAK for him....

i have a couple of my collection set aside for him once he's mature enough, i'm trying to decide between a translucent red Spartan Lite or a translucent blue Climber.....

the main difference between them is the Spartan is a little thicker and has a phillips head screwdriver and a mini LED flashlight in the center layer, the Climber has a thinner center layer that just has a pair of scissors and has a parcel hook on the bottom, all other tools are the same.

lets be honest here, the LED flashlight on the Spartan is a gimmick, nothing more, but the phillips head screwdriver is a useful tool, however, the Climber is a simpler design, and the scissors are a more useful tool than the pathetically dim flashlight.....

so, it basically comes down to Phillips screwdriver Vs. scissors.....

what would be the better first SAK?.....

Specifically made for little Logan, may I suggest the My First Victorinox:

Who could imagine, Victorinox thinks of these wonderful kids.

that's not a bad idea actually, nice rounded blade, and the multifunction tool, it might be one he could handle next year, if he matures more, he has a younger sister and an impulse control problem, they tend to play rather rough, (Sage can dish it out as well as take it, having Logan as her brother has made her a tough little girl ;) )

Clearly he's not ready for the responsibility of knife ownership yet, even if supervised

the more i think about it, the more i think Logan's going to end up with the Spartan Lite anyway, as i don't really like it, i purchased the Climber with the intention of giving it to him in a couple years, yet i'm finding that *I* actually like it better than the Spartan Lite....

i think Logan having a Phillips screwdriver on the knife will reinforce the *tool* aspect more anyway....

The MY First Vic,is also available as My First Vic plus, which has a saw blade added. Which I wouldn't mind having myself ,hung from a neck lanyard.make a nice backup to the backup when traipsing in the woods.

Hit the send buton too quickly. You may want to consider taking the Spartan Lite and put it in the hands of an experienced modder, there are some here and on SOSAK as well, ask them if they would swap out the LED for a magnifier. That would make a great knife for a young one, something to aid in splinter removal, and something to encourage an interest in nature when you have him outdoors.

I just scrambled out for an Alox Soldier ('02). Highly recommended :)
I have all sorts of multitools but the Soldier seems to have just the right tools, and none of the crap.

I would have liked a saw, and so you could consider also the Farmer.

If you want more tools without too much bloat, i'd recommend the Huntsman, or Ecoline version of that (same but cheaper. cellidor scales arent shiny lol)

Inspira, SOSAK ^.^
